one minute i'm hot and the next i'm shivering. i have a 4 year old at school and a 15 month at home so i can't go to bed. I've taken paracetamol, eaten chicken soup and had a glass of brandy (which has left me feeling tipsy). any other practical advice??

If you can get to the store try getting some zinc lozenges and take large doses of vitamin C. The C helps support/boost your immune system and zinc has been shown to help shorten the duration of a cold.

Other than that try a vaporizer and just keeping yourself as comfortable as possible. If you have or can get essential oils a few drops of lavendar and eucalyptus in a hot tub later will help you relax and help you breathe better.

Feel better!

Sounds like you have the flu. I've heard that "Cold-Eze" work because they are loaded with zinc. My mother turned me onto this stuff called "Emergen-C" and I pour the powder into a water bottle and drink it every morning. It tastes a little like Gatorade but is FULL of vit. C and all the Bs. Chicken soup helps only because it is hot and opens your sinuses to help you breathe. But I still recommend it. The brandy sounds great to me but you might try hot tea mixed with honey, brandy (or whiskey) and cinnamon instead. Give it 10 days. But seeing a doctor might not hurt either. Hope you feel better, I know how it is to be sick with young kids. I hope they don't get it!

You need rest. Take a hot Lemsip/paracetamol drink & go to bed with the 15 month old and get someone else to pick up your 4 year old from school, then stay there as long as you can.
You could soldier on, but it will take you longer to get over it. This way you will get better quicker. If the kids do get it, then all go to bed & snuggle up together! Good luck : )

No more brandy!!!! Get some cold and flu remedy like beechams or lemsip. Take them instead of the paracetamol. Drink plenty of water and keep warm. Sleep when you can and don't over do things. See if a neighbour or friend will watch the kids whilst you get some sleep. Feel better soon. xxx

oh poor you, a really good remedy is an old fashioned one, cut up a lemon into a pyrex jug, add about 3 teaspoons of sugar pour boiling water over it then add a desert spoon of honey, stir it up, add a tiny bit of brandy or whiskey leave it to stand for about 15 mins then sit in a comfy chair put duvet over you watch a girly movie on the tv and sip the lemon tea, ooooooh i almost wish i had a cold and could do the same, get well soon

Do as little as possible, drink lots of fluid, green teas or any herbal teas also help. Lemsip works the best for me. Just don't ever drink Brandy. If you have to Light the brandy first (So that the alcohol gets burnt) and then drink the brandy

Drink lots of water to flush out the virus, have a glass of hot lemon juice with honey if your throat is sore, take paracetamol and try and get as much rest as possible.

The three secret ingredients for my “Special-Tea” are:

1) Ginger

2) Lemon juice

3) Honey

That’s it!

Why ginger, lemon and honey?

Well, you probably know that lemon is high in Vitamin C. It is also full of phytochemicals. These are plant constituents that help boost the immune system and much more.

Ginger and honey are also well documented to help the immune system.

Have plenty of rest, try to eat and drink lots of water, steaming would be good for unblocking the nose.

Good luck, hope you feel well soon

Forget the booze - what's wrong with you anyway? You have a kid at home! What if you had an emergency or something with the baby?

Get yourself some Vics Vaporrub and just rest.
