Next Monday I am starting a new job. I had two interviews and in both the guy who interviewed me (director) was wearing jeans (and it wasn't a dress down Friday). What should I wear on my first day? I am worried that jeans are too casual but i don't want to overdress either...

I would wear a sweater and a skirt. The skirt shouldn't be too short (just over the knee can be find).

I agree Jeans will be too casual for Day 1.

I'd stay away from pants - too many of them are low-riding and that's not good for Day 1.

Okay, you want a nice mix of casual/feminine/sophisticated chic for your look. Let's see...

1. Try dark blue jeans-- straight and high waist if you can find that.

2. A white long sleeve blouse.

3. A black or navy blue blazer or a soft/moderate/bold colored curduroy short jacket.

4 For shoes, preferably quite low heel shoes. Or, boots. Ankle if the jeans are too skinny for boots to go under or the regular under-the-knee-length if the jean is large enough.

For accessories, maybe not too much jewelery except for fine/small earrings, necklace, bracelet, etc. Go for a soft colored scarf-- a long one- and tie it around your neck casually. But remember, this is only if it's cold enough where you are! Anyway, to finish (again, this is for chilly whether), go for a beret or newsboy hat if you want. Can be very nice.

No matter how the staff is dressed, you want to present a good first impression. I beleive you can never over dress. Try a pair of black or tan slacks. Creased in the fronts. With a long sleeved button down top. Jewelry always accents an outfit, but not too much. A subtle pair of earings and matching thin necklace with a small pendant. And a pair of open toed heels. Leave your hair natural, too much hair spray will ruin the effect.

Well, if your director is in jeans, I think you should be allowed too. Try your cutest jeans, but nothing too baggy (don't want to look like an emo) and a white blouse. Oh, and some shoes, not trainers. Maybe not extreme heels, but certainly shoes.

That way it's casual, without being streetwear. And maybe put your hair up if you're in the mood. :)

Just wear either a nice pair of black pants or a nice black skirt and black stockings with a neat shirt. They're not incredibly formal, and not incredibly casual either, and foolproof either way for the first day. Try and wear simple shoes to dress it down a little too, like just some mary janes or slip ons instead of heels.

You have to pay no mind at all to what your boss is wearing...at the end of the day you are starting a job! So put your best foot forward and dress to impress!!! after working there for a while you will be able to judge what is acceptable without standing out. But lets face it you are starting a new job, you will be centre of attention! no matter what your wearing!! Good luck.

Congratulations on your new job.

You may want to dress a less professional, but personally, for the first impression of the day at the office, be safe and go in a smart and formal wear.

There are a couple of ways, you can create a smart but casual look, yet still look 'part of the job'.

Heres an sample idea for you: http://www.additionsdirect.co.uk/AddNet/shop/Additions/-c22027-kAboundAdditions2006-n164-y4-p267305/-Womens-V-Neck-Cardigan/product.aspx

A cardigan top or wrap style top, more slough style trousers and a pair of glittery pumps.

Not jeans until you are sure that is acceptable. definitely wear smart casual, that means no sequins or glitter, no overpowing earrings, no clashing patterns or colours and definitely no trainers. I would wear a single colour skirt or trousers either navy, black or grey not red or purple, and a shirt or long sleeved t shirt style top. subtle day makeup and simple earrings. You will soon suss out what you should wear when you see other employees in similar jobs.

Nothing to fancy, but you should look nice. Pumps not heals, look business but femine. Nice slacks, with a top, and maybe a jacket to match...depending on the weather. You would not want to go with a skirt on your first day, so you will feel more comfortable. Not a lot of jewlery...post Earrings maybe...don't over do the makeup. One necklace should safice. Good luck..have a wonderful day!

don't go in first day and turn up on the second day dressed as a vicar and say "dearly beloved, we are gathered here today" then run out the office shouting - its a wrap whilst doing a moonie at the director (during this time you can see what everybody else is wearing and you can go back in on the 3rd day dressed as everybody else was.
