I fear the propogation of irrational fear in today's society. It doesn't control me but apparently, it controls most people in society.

As for why others let it control them, perhaps they are more prone to being brainwashed as they fail examine the truth.

I only fear the idea of feeling fear.
When a person realizes that fear is due to not wanting to feel ____( fill in the blank ), then fear has less effect.
We have the ability to decide basically what we feel, and when, and even how.
If someone is gonna put a knife to your throat, or you see a spider crawling across your arm, which would you fear more?
Why?
One will cause your life to end quick, and one may take your life, yet be more painful than the other.
Since we all are going to die anyway, one would think you would fear the poison of the spider, and it's pain, more than the knife, which would end some what quickly.
But the violence of the blade brings more fear than the almost daily association with the spider.

Each normal person may want to live. Fear of death is a personal choice, as everyone will die, eventually.
No human is unique in that aspect.
We control our fear, and should not let fear control our lives.

Hmm.... Well, I fear making the wrong choice. This fear doesn't really control me but it's a big factor in my decision making. Besides, I'm learning more and more that mistakes are permissable and sometimes needed to learn to make the right choices.

That's on a personal level.

Can fear control us?
On a personal level, it's like a foot falling asleep. It can paralyze but you can fight the pins and needles, limp and eventually walk again. If that's not the reason, some agent (in this case, trauma/bad memory) is causing it so you have to treat the condition appropriately and uproot the cause.
When it concerns the masses unfortunately, it's more difficult. Fear is contagious and the stronger the fear, the harder it is to quell that force.

Why do we let it control us? In most cases, fear is one's survival instinct towards the unknown or the dangerous. So naturally, we react that way.
However, when it comes to phobias or even abstract fears, we let it control us because some people fear there is too much pain or unknown factors to face so they prefer to stay in their comfort zone. That's why courage, however stupid, is still respected. :)

this links up well to the other question of yours. I mentioned control of a sort over my kids. that controlling manner is based on fears. I fear that i will make mistakes as a parent, that will not be good for my children. so i do tend to come accross as overprotective at times, which goes against my trying equally as hard to be open minded. i feel i only have these few years ,in which i can make or break them, and the end result will be the type of adult they grow into. this is definately the most important thing which i have to do and take responsiblity for.

the fear of messing up , does control my mind ,as it works overtime ,deciding how to handle life's little hurdles ,so that there are not too many grazed knees the other side. I don't think that is altogether too bad.

My 2 biggest fear is being burned alive and being buried alive. I think fear can control us, some people more than others. I don't think we let fear control us, I think we have no control over it. Lets face it, if you could just say go away fear and it would, wouldn't you do that? I think we all would.

I think how much this fear controls you is a matter of how you deal with it. Some people look at it logical and say, I will not dwell on it and deal with it if it comes and others dwell on it and it overtakes their lives.

My biggest fear is the dark and i think most of the time your fear can control you. I have to turn lights on as i move through the house. I think we let it control us because it's the fear of the unknown. I have a phobia of the dark and have had since a child and never grown out of it, it's cos you dont know what's there

And then there are frogs.
1. Yes that fear can control me.
2. I let it control me because there is no way that I am letting that green peeing thing on or any where near me. PERIOD!

Depends on what the fear is. fear of getting your head bit off by a lion is mostly a good thing--unless of course you're sigfried and roy. Of course they do have the right attitude as far as overcoming our fears--that's part of the growing process. If a fear is not overcome and nurtured it becomes a phobia. So maybe I need to go find a lion--peace out!
