I think they originally were side show freaks who swallowed live creatures or insects, but is has mutated into just meaning uncool. i think nerd means an overly academic uncool person. There are better words than geek and nerd for this kind of thing, I love Homer Simpsons "Poindexter" I'm not american so I'd love to know where this came from????

I always thought that a Geek was a person who didn't always have the best dress sense and who was always in school on time, thus being very unpopular.

A Nerd is the opposite except the fact that he made more of an effort to succeed in school and was regarded the 'school nerd'

A geek bites the head off of live chickens in a carnival. He usually is given a bottle of cheap whiskey a day to stay drunk.

A nerd is an American slang expression designating an uncool person. The word geek has been used as an equivalent term for nerd by the uneducated masses who are indifferent to language and verbal communication.

A geek is a person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd

Nerd, as a stereotypical or archetypal designation, refers to somebody who pursues academic and intellectual interests at the expense of social skills such as: interpersonal communication, fashion, hygeine and physical fitness.

A Nerd is the smart kid with broken glasses and highwater trousers.
A Geek is the one who builds a desktop kiln to fix those broken glasses and then wants to share the plans for the device to you and everyone else.
