The iPod may be the coolest gadget around but, whether you like it or not, one day you'll look at it and laugh at its limited technology (just like you might laugh at the fact that your very first Sony Walkman - the coolest gadget of its time - played cassettes).

Nobody could believe (even if they wanted to) that we've come up with the perfect machine in the form of the ipod, so my question is - can anyone speculate on what kind of device we will be using to listen to music in the future?

You're so right big-V - the fact that the iPod still contains moving parts is the reason I don't own one.

Firstly; it won't have a bloody hard drive. I'm surprised we are still using a mechanical device for storage even today. So expect a solid state 80Gb iPod sooner rather than later.

There will also be better compression in music, allowing even more music. The mp3 standard will be replaced at some point.

Design will move with the times. There is noway of predicting really. BUT I would be surprised if a true Apple mobile phone/ipod is not already in the pipeline. I think the iPod will dominate the portable music market, just like Sony did for at least another 10-15 years.

There are a two things they are saying will...
AIO Card, or the All in One Card. A super thin, credit-card shaped device, the AIO Card is powered through its solar panels and has an e-ink-like display, allowing for touchscreen capabilities, fairly high resolution, and incredibly low power consumption. And some of the newer cell phones.
