Without a shadow of doubt it has to be ELVIS. He gave the world rock 'n' roll and was the inspiration behind many British and American bands/solo artist from the early 60's onwards.
His status in rocks hall of fame is legendary as well as his unique ground breaking style and sound.
Without Elvis I doubt we'd of seen the likes of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimmi Hendrix...etc
As a final thought, how many other pop artist/s are still idolised and worshipped by millions, 30 years after there death?

Cream, Stones, Clash, Sex Pistols, Romones, Bad Religion, Elvis Costello, Eno, David Bowie, Dylan (son and father), UB40, U2, Chuck Berry, BB King, John Hiatt, John Lennon, Richard Thompson, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, James Brown... and so on

Each has had an influence... music, since it is a dynamic, organic thing... defies any attempt at a hard and fast definition and refuses to be restrained by the fences we try to put around it.

I think possibly the Motown sound in general has been the most influential sound/collection of bands...

...the sound influenced all modern music - the beatles and the stones were influenced by it, as where the who, floyd, hendrix....all of the bands that people quote today as their influences.

If it wasn't for Motown, pop music really wouldn't have turned out the same way.

The Beatles, in my opinion. But many others such as Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Marc Bolan etc etc etc (I could go on). If I had to choose one which made the most impact on the most musical genres, then I'd stick with The Beatles.
