The Wright brothers, Orville Wright (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 - May 30, 1912), are generally credited with making the first controlled, powered, heavier-than-air flight on December 17, 1903. In the two years afterward, they developed their flying machine into the world's first practical fixed-wing aircraft, along with many other aviation milestones.

In 1849 Sir George Cayley's glider flew at least twice with an unknown 10 year old boy at the column. The first adult flew his glider in 1853 across Brompton Dale but again the pilot is only speculated to be his butler. The Wrights were just the first to make an engine-powered machine work.

Ballooning: On 21 November 1783, the first free flight by humans was made by Pilâtre de Rozier and the marquis d'Arlandes, who flew aloft for 25 minutes about 100 metres above Paris for a distance of nine kilometres.

SPLATT is correct.

And to clear up any other misconceptions, the first manned, controlled powered flight was in a dirigible (Giffard with steam in 1852, Haenlein with a gas engine in 1872, and Renard & Krebs with an electric motor in 1884.)

Airplanes were late on the scene, since they required a more efficient and powerful engine to both move them forward and to create lift.
