There is much to know about car maintinence, at least once a week check tire pressure in each tire, oil level, brake fluid once a month, and power steering fluid for starters. Routine oil changes with a mechanic usually has a 12 point vehicle inspection included, and all you fluids are topped off. If you smell burning of any kind have it checked out immediately. recommended oil changes are every 3000 miles or 3 months and cost between 14.95 and 24.95 it is good that you are taking an interest in your car maintinence, and many mechanics will allow you to watch the procedure and ask questions so do it. Be attentive to your car it will tell you when it is getting sick.

Pre-start check in your car is important esp. if you drive all day long. Check oil level, radiator coolant level, gas/fuel, tires and tire pressure, brakes, fan/other belts, lights, horn, windshield washers, wipers, power steering fluid.

As to how to prevent accident or fire, you have to follow the maintenance schedules of your car oil change, tire change, good lighting system, etc.

You have to be a defensive driver: knowing all the traffic laws/rules and the strict observance of such rules.

You have to be constantly alert while driving and have an intelligent adjustment of one's driving when other drivers commit driving errors.

Driving requires an attitude of confidence to drive safely at all times.

there are a million things, top of my head is the oil and how much gas you have. Always check under the car for rust. O and don forget to check the battery. But something tells me if you have to ask this, you may want someone who knows how to check these things, check them :) Like a guy friend or your Dad.
