Q: "Whats the difference between The Sun and The Beano?
A: 20p
Seriously, DON'T buy the tabloids, majority of them are scandal mongering, celebrity driven, gutter trash.
However, I would recommend The Independent as it's readers tend to have a more balanced opinion, and the ability to make their own minds up, not told what to think.

There is a formula for this which I cannot remember - but it is based on the number of words using more syllables.
Take a one hundred word sample from each newspaper you want -it must be one hundred consecutive words and preferably in the same article - and make a tally of words by syllable count.
This reply for example is as follows:- (to here)
1 syllable = 44
2 syllables = 9
3 syllables = 7
4 syllables = 2
The more words with 3 or more syllables - the more difficult the text demanding a higher reading age.
I have found the formula if you want to calculate more precisely.
1. Gunning 'FOG' Readability Test [14]
Select samples of 100 words, normally three such samples.
(i) Calculate L, the average sentence length (number of words ÷ number of sentences). Estimate the number of sentences to the nearest tenth, where necessary.
(ii) In each sample, count the number of words with 3 or more syllables.
Find N, the average number of these words per sample.
Then the grade level needed to understand the material = (L + N) × 0.4
So the Reading Age = [ (L + N) × 0.4 ] + 5 years.

I am 40 and have no trouble understanding every word in The Mail, The Telegraph, The Times and The Independent. However, I have real trouble reading the sun. There are so many words of which I do not comprehend. What is 'chav', a 'rotty' and what is a 'jodiemarshflashesanippy'. So I suppose my reading age demographic takes a terrible downwards trend at the point.
