Narcolepsy is the result of an abnormal gene in the hypothalmus. In 1999 researchers identified the gene that causes narcolepsy. The gene allows cells in the hypothalamus (the part of the brain that regulates sleep behavior) to receive messages from other cells. When this gene is abnormal, cells cannot communicate properly, and abnormal sleeping patterns develop. The hypothalamus is also the area of the brain that regulates the body's blood sugar levels. Perhaps the abnormal gene is having an effect on that aspect of the hypothalamus as well. The person displaying those symtoms may want to go get his/her insulin tested as it sounds like they could possibly develope diabetes as a result of an imbalance in blood sugar levels.

the body is like a car - it needs food to work.
narcolepsy people sleep a lot - they need food to strength their body so it will have strength to sleep. it sounds weird but when people are in deep sleep, they have deep breathing - it's like a car driving 200 kilometers an hour - it needs a strong engin and lots of fuel.
the body usually seeks for food that has fast digestion - like sugar and other carbohydrates that fills the appetite as fast as it can.
