These days there is racing all year round with the advent of All-Weather tracks.

The start of the turf flat season is the Lincoln Meeting at Doncaster (held 23rd-25th March this year), although the "purists" consider the Newmarket Craven meeting to be the start of racing proper (held 18th-20th April in 2006).

Interestingly the end of the turf season is also at Doncaster - the November Handicap Meeting on 4th November, and yet again the purists believe that Champions Day at Newmarket on 14th October should signify the end of the season, as that is when the last British Group One race of the year is held.

The jumps season will start in earnest once the flat is out of the way and will end after the Grand National in April 2007. However, yet again, there is now actually racing all year round with Summer Jumping springing up all over the place.

Some people, me included, would say let the horses/trainers/stable lads/jockeys, have some decent time off, but these days it is all about the betting turnover and the people that actually do all the work do not seem to matter
