42A is overstrength. Plus, they split up the old Division-level PSBs and devolved them down to the BCTs. Personnel is a hectic job, especially during deployments. Unless you go career, you just don't develop the expertise to be hired later on as a government contractor either.
If you don't want a medical MOS, you need to ask yourself what your strengths are. If you've already taken the ASVAB, then you should know where your talents lie and what MOS fields are available to you. There is no sense in recommending any particular field as "great" or "better than the others" for females, as each individual has different strengths.
You may find yourself happy in a maintenance job, or you may have talents in public affairs, military intelligence, and more cerebral tasks. The only jobs you can't do are combat arms, so you have a lot to choose from.
The best career choice you can make is to find a job that will give you certification in the civilian field even if you do not go career for whatever reason. Technical jobs like aviation mechanic will do this for you immediately. So will anything to do with communications. Personnel and intel jobs are harder to quantify, unless you have a language under your belt.
Don't plan for 20 years you may never end up serving, plan for where you see yourself in 3 years and with what skills. If you need help, feel free to email me and I'll do the best I can to give you the information you need.
Good luck.

Administrative Specialist (42A) is a great job. Not just for a girl but for anyone. Granted yes it's a desk jockey's job, but most of the people you encounter in the field are great and it's very easy to establish a comfortable casual atmosphere in your office. Plus if you do end up wanting to switch jobs, while your admin you might get lucky and be placed in an office with a lot of top officers, so establish some connections in high places and it's easy to excel.

Sugar B is right on. An Administrative Specialist is a great job. I was one when I was in, at the time it was 71L, but has been changed in the past few years. I also went to postal school at Ft. Ben Harrison Indiana. I worked in a MPO in Korea. It was a blast. You will meet so many great people in the military.
btw....some people on here don't know anything about the military. Females can do any job males do, except be in combat. And Females don't only cook and iron BDU's.

Engineer babe! Its a man dominated field and they don't think women are smart enough to do it. It's the old way of thinking but who says the army is going too far in the future way of thinking. If your intelligent you can blow your colleagues away! It's not for everyone but I'm sure you can do it.
