The Irish had a custom of lighting candles in turnips and other vegetables on All Hallows Eve to keep spirits away. When they came to America, they discovered that pumpkins were bigger and easier to carve. Besides the orange glow is kinda kool.

Gotta have Jack-o-lanterns. In the old Celtic culture, they used other squash the same way. The scary faces with the candle inside kept the bad spirits from entering a home.

its big and easy to hollow out and its orange which makes it a good fall color
