I don't think you have to "do" anything in Hawaii to have fun. It's just a great place. I went last year and spent 3 days on the big island, and two on Oahu. It was great. You don't have to do anything while you're there, and you'll still say it was your best vacation ever.

I recommend MAui; the only thing interesting on the big island is the volcano. If you go to Maui, you gotta do the downhill bike ride. I don't recommend the sunrise one because you have to get up at 3:00 AM to get started up the mountain and its cold up there that early. If you are a romantic do it, but otherwise no. There are different bike companies and some don't take you all the way to the top, and some don't guide you back down. You can come down by yourself, there's only one road with just a little traffic, but if you are squeamish about riding in the street, a company that accompanies you down will help watch the traffic for you. I have been twice and prefer Maui Downhill to the others. These companies have web sites They will pick you up at your hotel, take you to their shop to pick out a wet-suit (for the cold and mist/rain shower maybe) and gloves and helmet; then take you up the mountain; then follow your group down so they can block traffic for your ride; then afterwards take you back to your hotel. Expect this activity to take 75-80% or more of the day.

Also on the Maui Island: The Road to Hana is a great drive (you need a rental car). It’s a 45 mile winding road that takes 4 hours to drive. Its like driving through the jungle; has a bunch of one lane bridges. Then drive past Hana to the Seven-Pools attraction and go for a swim.

On the Big Island of Hawaii: go to the Volcano National Park. Also go see Akaka Falls. If you like horseback riding, go to the Parker Ranch and go for a guided ride. Drive to the south end of the island and see a black sand beach. For information about tours and things to do, click on the link below for Roberts Hawaii. They do tours on all of the islands.

If you are the outdoor type you will have a lot of fun, whichever Island you chose. I have not been to Maui or the BI but just based on my experience in Oahu and knowledge the Islands have plenty to do, such as hiking, snockling, tours, luau, cultural activities and such....

There is also a ferry in Maui that you can take to a neighbor Island, Lanai and Molokai I think..... that will get you out to see another Island without spending too much money.

You will need a car on either the BI or Maui because they don't have a bus system like Oahu does.

If you have the money, Maui is the better place to go. A trip around the island is breathtaking, splendorific. If you're on a budget, go to the Big Island. If you can afford both, go to the Big Island first, then get back to Maui.

Maui is much the prettier island. Maui is also more built-up and expensive.

The Big Island has Hilo, a small rainy town on one side, and some interesting towns on the other side, with nothing except lava fields in between. The most interesting part of the Big Island is the northwestern corner with the lush, green farms/ranches. You might also like to go to the observatory on top of one of the two Maunas (snow-covered mountains). You could freeze and get altitude sickness in the morning, then slide downhill to the sea in the afternoon. It's interesting.

I just got back from the Big Island. There are lots of things to do there. First, stay on the Kona side, south of the airport is Kailua, It is a nice small town with lots of condos. Do you dive? Take one of the dive boats out for a dive with the Manta rays...incredible. Want to see turtles? There is a turtle sanctuary, just walk over from the harbor. When you are on the 19, south of the airport, turn west on Kealakehe pkwy, turn right on the first street, go around to the parking lot full of boats. Now, follow the trail at the end of the parking lot towards the beach. There are turtles down there sleeping in the sand. Another place to go is to the far south end of the island, take the 11 down to South Point Rd. Go to the most southern point in the U.S. When you get to the end of the road, hike 3 miles to the east to a green sand beach. Afterward, continue east to the volcanoes. Don't expect to see lava running down the mountain. We took a helicopter tour and there was only a small hole about 6 feet across that you could look down into and see lava. It is pretty rare that the lava spews out.
One day we went north to the town of Hawi. Don't miss the 'Flumin the Ditch' You take kayaks down an old irrigation channel. Very beautiful and relaxing, Only the person in front and back paddle on a 5-6 person kayak, so sit in the middle, While we were there, the same company runs a Hummer tour. It is a blast if you like sloshing through the mud and running through the streams to get to beautiful unspoiled country.
We also went horse back riding up near highway 250. I can't remember all those odd names.
I have also been to Maui many times mostly to scuba dive. It is the tops there, go with Lahaina Divers, they will spoil you. Don't miss the down hill bike ride from the top of Haleakala (sure hope I spelled that correctly) You watch the sunrise then coast downhill on a bicycle with good brakes for about 36 miles. You can drive to Hana but there is not much there. During the drive, stop many times at waterfalls. Don't forget to eat at Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina (not affiliated with Jimmy Buffetts song of the same title) Which ever you choose, you won't be sorry, Maui is more touristy. Big Island more laid back. Go to this website and order the activity book 101 things to do. They are free at the airport when you arrive, but you may see something in there you just have to do.

If you like to go on tours, plan on $100 per person, any tour, any island.
