Well comming from a hairdresser, if someone sits in the chair and is a total chatterbox, (we) can't be completely quite because then people think your anti-social..at the same time I get irritated when people want to know everything about me(how long I been married, what I had for breakfast, ect.) I talk to people if they want to talk, I never force people to talk and sometimes it's nice to just hand them a magazine so I can do my job. I like to connect with my client's, but that doesn't mean I need them to know my whole life story and for me to have to know their's...
p.s.- majority of us (hairdressers) are very good at multitasking and talking isn't a major distraction.

The hairdresser wants to do all the talking? They always seem to ask embarassing questions like how long it has been since I had a haircut. They ask that every time. I dont keep track of when I was there the last time. If they want to know why don't they just check their records. I always go to the same place.

IME Haircutters do more of the talking to establish good relations with clients, but sometimes clients will want to talk and the haircutter is forced into the role of a surrogate psychologist! YMMV.

Maybe people go to the hairdressers to cheer themselves up and catch up on the gossip. Just like they did in the old time corner stores.

I rather not talk it's the hair stylist that trys to get all personal! They always cut off too much if they cut just what I asked them to (a TRIM!) it won't take as long. Maybe they think it will get them a bigger tip.

well barbers like to talk, they usually are the ones who start the conversations. I guess men are multi taskers tho?

for the customers...business n relations stuff
if i hav a haircut, dye, wash n brushing am sure to fall asleep...
the chat keeps customers from geting bored on that seat n just just "snip snip" of scissors...or "hum" of equipment
by talking they get personal..n its a gud way to make the customers tell them wat they actually like...koz many times...the description customers giv arent wat they actually meant!!
hairdressers also get fed up just working wiv their fingers n hand...som mouth movement help them enjoy their job!!
