My daughter did this using it for a timer and conincidentaly now the microwave does not work, it is only two years old. Could this have been the reason?

yes , it is definatly the reason. you burned out the megnetron, ( the unit that sends waves into the oven) and because there was nothing to use those waves they backed up and overloaded it and you need a new one.
on digital microwaves if you want to use as timer then set power to "0" and then set time, the inside lite may come on but thats ok.
when it dings, your done,lol.

Shouldn't be. Microwaves are designed to handle this type of treatment. When you say it doesn't work, do you mean it won't turn on at all, or just won't heat things up?

Yeah, I concur with Tim. But wouldn’t you buy your daughter a stop-watch?
