Its not a joke. The person said it with conviction. I just found it hard to swallow. So I figured I speak directly to some islamic people so I would have a retort for this guy.

first of all -- whats Islamic children? second from where did u get this info? third -- ask the person to stop lying and pulling ur leg.
we all have formal educations just like others and many now-a-days, even higher educations.
EDIT: give him/her this, it will help.

also tell him/her, that education irrespective of -- this world and God's world -- is important. also tell him/her that Allah asks to think, question and reason for ourselves and to make the choices after reading. also tell the person, that most muslims read both Arabic and (Elimentary)Other Education together since childhood.

it depend on the school.
But yes, the study of Islam and Quran is a must for kids. But religion study comprehends not only Islam . Muslims know well about all religion.
My friend studied in school where they learned French and German as well, not only Quran in arabic
