I start with deep breathing. Then on each exhale, I focus on relaxing my body. I start with my head or feet, either one, and with each successive exhale I try to advance the relaxation further. For me this normally works real quick. My husband always used to count backward from 1000. I have tried this too, and it is surprisingly effective, although I prefer my relaxation technique. The main objective of anything like that is to focus your mind on one single thing rather than letting it drift to all your various problems and puzzles. It allows your brain to relax enough to let your body go to sleep.

Bedtime snacks can help. An amino acid called tryptophan, found in milk, turkey, and peanuts, helps the brain produce serotonin, a chemical that helps you relax. Try drinking warm milk or eat a slice of toast with peanut butter or a bowl of cereal before bedtime. Plus, the warmth may temporarily increase your body temperature and the subsequent drop may hasten sleep. I have tried drinking the warm milk and/or eating some turkey and they both really do put you in the mood to fall asleep!
