Walt Disney Concert Hall - how can you possibly go wrong photographing something designed by Frank Gehry?
The Getty Museum and The Getty Villa - exceptional examples of beautiful architecture
Hsi Lai Buddist Temple - a bit of a drive east, but worth it.
Yamashiro Restaurant (Hollywood hills) - architecture and cityscapes - especially beautiful at sunset
Santa Monica Mountains - explore just about any hiking trail and you'll find beautiful things to photograph
The Japanese Garden (Van Nuys) - one of the most beautiful hidden gems I've found in the LA area
Fullerton Arboretum - a bit of a drive since it's in the OC, but surprisingly lovely with a variety of terrain to shoot
The Lake Shrine Garden - another jewel hidden in LA that I didn't learn about until recently
Ennis House - I'm not sure if it's open to the public right now but a Frank Lloyd Wright house is worth a shot!

Normally, I would say go downtown and take pix of the architecture. Some of the buildings in the older sections of the city are quite remarkable like the Bradbury bldg, union station, city hall, the towers on bunker hill, The MTA plaza, or the main library downtown. Also going up into Hollywood, and out the wilshire district will get you some nice pictures. The problem is since 9-11 security around some of these places has gotten a bit paranoid. The library tower,( the biggest one downtown) has a bad rep for chasing off even tourists with cameras. I'd say go, get some great pix, but know your rights, and ask permission if you think there might be a problem. One last idea, log onto popphoto.com and read the article from the July issue regarding the war on photographers. Not so much for the article per se, but for the links to copyright and trademark offices to check if anything you're going to shoot is trademarked, or copyrighted.

I am not sure by what you mean as a good place, nor do i understand what you mean as a good thing. Do you want to photograph nature or landscapes? Do you want to photograph bees on flowers? If you like animals go down to San Diego and spend a few days at the zoo. If you like large landscapes and pristine nature, there are several national parks in California with great beauty. What is the stuff you want to take pictures of day or night?

Would you like something really different? I suggest the Griffith Park OLD abandoned L.A. zoo (now a picnic area.) Old cages, an abandoned zoo-keepers house, defunct caves and neat architecture. Very, very unique.

When i was about four i went there. I would take pics of the Hollywood Sign and the stars on the pavement. I would also keep track of all the fast food places.
