Lots of things. Some, like 2 of my foster kids are due to mother doing drugs during pregnancy, some due to spinal cord or brain injuries, some from certain medications, some are hereditary like my 3rd foster kid, some due due mishandling after birth like my 4th foster kid, and some just happen out of the blue, like my own daughter. Also there are many disabilities that don't show up at birth, like learning disabilities. I will not yell at you for saying unnormal or special ed because you are just not educated. Some say special needs, or handicapped but it depends on the person. Some one with cerebral palsy with a sharp mind may not like to be labled at all. But my 5, wo are severely mentally disabled as well don't seem to give a darn what you call it.

It depends on the condition. Sometimes it's a genetic defect, like Down's Syndrome, but sometimes it can be caused by something during the pregnancy. A whole list of bad stuff has been linked with drugs taken and alcohol consumed during the pregnancy. Interestingly enough, some over the counter drugs can put the baby at risk for some defects, so checking with a doctor when in question is never unreasonable.

lots are genetic issues from heredity issues.maybe enviroinmental factors in some cases.today a good many kids w/
real problems that require special ed can be traced to some form of drug use..either prescrition that had side effects unknown to user...or illegal drugs so many things can contribute..and there are many areas of special ed and many conditions have a wide range of severity.some require only a nudge of help..others are life long conditions.

no such word as "unnormal" first of all. disabilities, retardation, cerebral palsy, etc. can be caused by numerous things.. missing chromosomes, diseases, conditions, brain injuries at birth or before, the baby just forming incorrectly in the womb (such as missing corpus collusum), prematurity, the mother drinking and/or doing drugs while pregnant.
