Welcome to Catalina. I am not sure if you are looking for a beach for swimming or snorkeling, so I'll address both.
There are two beaches on either side of the Pleasure Pier in town. Both have very calm waters, as do all of the beaches in the Avalon area. These are the beaches that are great for families as the waves are virtually nonexistent, lots of sand to play in at low tide, and food and bathrooms close by.
As you walk out toward the Casino there is another beach which is more suited to sunbathers. It is all sand and has steps that lead out into the water for a dip when you get too hot.
If you continue out past the Casino you will find the Descanso Beach Club. They have a bit of a sandy spot, but the water area is large smooth rocks. The water is calm and is a good spot for snorkeling, especially if you are a beginner. They have food and a bar, as well as bathrooms. In the summer they have bands that play in the afternoons several days a week. There is also a grassy area where the kids can run around and play.
All of the beaches in Avalon are somewhat of a surprise to most visitors who are used to broad expanses of white sand. In the summer be prepared to get to know those around you on the beach as it is very crowded. October is actually a great time to visit as the crowds are gone but the weather is still very nice.
Happy Travels!

I have been to Catalina and the only beach is in the city Avion (not sure about the spelling) the other "beach" areas are made of rock. The one in the city has a small sand area (the sand was imported) The water is calm, and cold. I was there on a July 4th and couldn't stay in the water for very long, it's only like 50 degrees. It's a cute little island but seems over priced and over rated to me. Def. not a tropical setting by any means. I hope you have fun though! =) Happy travels!!!

You might have to do some hunting, because the side of the island that Avalon is on is going to be your calmest water, since the city faces towards the mainland. You might want to do some hiking to find some beaches, I did not go off too much when I was there, but I guarantee that where ever you go is going to be beautiful, you would never know that it was California. If you call the company that cruises out there, they might have some suggestions, but there might be some locals that can give a little better guidance.
Watch out for those buffalo and wild pigs, its loads of fun there!!

Catalina Island is about 8 minutes long, so if you don't find it right away, you'll find your beach soon enough- you only depart in one place there - so to go to the safest place will just be a matter of getting the right cab
