What would be the best thing to say to reassure her that everything's going to be okay?

Some things to consider:
- It's her second son. The older son goes to a state college and commutes from home.
- The son's school is 3 hours away.
- The son is a good kid (so she doesn't have to worry about him too much).
- I'm the girlfriend of her older son, but we're very close. She treats me like family.

Lots of hugs, and then,
all you have to say is what you just said...
"The son is a good kid (so she doesn't have to worry about him too much)". If she needs more, remind her what a great Mom she is, to have raised him this far, and she should very proud that her baby has enough sense to go to college and make her more proud.
