It depends greatly on the religion as to the purpose.

Nonreligiously speaking it helps to calm the mind and give you greater awareness of your thoughts and actions.

Many religions promote some form of meditation. Here are a few and the reasons they state, usually, for meditation

Hinduism - to clear the mind and to search one's inner self and reconnect with the divine spark within. The rest of the reasoning depends greatly on the sect and denomination of the Hindu.

Buddhism - to calm the mind and clear it of all thoughts and emotions, etc, to help the devotee free themselves from all attachments. The greater reasoning greatly depends on the sect and denomination of the Buddhist.

Jainism - not deeply emphasized, but practice to clear the mind and help one be more aware of their thoughts and actions so as to avoid injuring any living being.

Sikhism - recommended to comtemplate God, to know God.

Taoism - recommended to help get in tune and stay in tune and harmony with Tao.

Christianity - silence is recommended so that you can hear God when God speaks and so that you can come to feel God's presence around you.

Judaism - silence is recommended to feel the presence of God.

Islam - specific prayers and chants done with prayer beads is recommended to keep the mind focused on God.

Great question, thanks for asking!

Basically it is used to calm, center and ground the spirit. But it can also be a very good tool in self healing, or self discovery. It really all depends on the teaching you choose to follow. In recent years, it has become very popular with mental health professionals. The true power of the mind over our physical experience is still mostly a mystery. Too many things we can't logically explain.

To give you control of your mind. The practice is to consciously tell your mind what you want to think about. In many types of meditation, the meditator is encouraged to have an empty, clear or quiet mind. In any case, it is about practicing control of the mind and the emotions.

Meditation is a way that helps you clear your mind of all outside destractions and gives you quite time to talk to the lord.
That is what I use it for.
Life is so loud and busy with children. Quite is a gift I give myself everyday when they go to school for a few moments.

It helps make all those annoyances of the mundane world disappear.
