He is quoted as saying that he was a Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and Jew. It is understood that what he meant was that despite whatever religion he mainly practiced he was influenced by other religions, too. Hindus generally are well known for studying the various sacred texts of other traditions. I have visited my own local temple and have heard priests there have discussions on the Bhagavad Gita as well as read from and discuss the Koran and Bible and Dhammapada. Treating each sacred text as just one perspective out of many on God.

Buddhism and Hinduism are very similar in many respects. This is because Buddhism grew out of Hinduism (so did Jainism and Sikhism...these religions are called Dharmic religions). As a Hindu I have studied various Buddhist traditions as well. In fact it was at a Zen Buddhist center that I learned a very simple simple technique for meditating that I sometimes use when I don't have my japamala with me.

Peace be with you.

Hinduism was the religion of Prince Siddartha who was proclaimed the Buddha. He was enlightened after his intense search for the answer to his questions about people's different status in life. He did not leave his Hindu religion but people who have seen him as someone to emulate, they started to go away from their former belief and started to consider Prince Siddartha as the Buddha and later on made him God by others. There are many teachings from Buddhism which can also be found as excerpts from Hinduism.

I read a quote by him saying that he was Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Jew...
in the quote, he was proving the point that he was connected to all religions at the same time, and espoused the philosophy of them all.

what a great man.

hope that helps!
