Probably some kind of computer issue. I have heard of a few prius owners having this kind of problem before. I think Toyota has a recall on some of them. Whatever it is, its under warranty so your Toyota dealer should make it right for you. Priuses are actually some of the most dependable cars on the road. For something so high tech, problems have been very few.

more info would be helpful

did the electric motor run? even if you run out of petrol the electric will still move you.
did any dashbord lights come on when you pressed the power button? if not is the auxillary (normal 12v) battery flat, eg side lights left on?

what oil are you using? 5W30 recommended, "normal" heavier oil can make starting dificult in cold weather. where are you?

when you mean start, do you mean turn on or the engine itself wouldnt start. if you have the smart key, the battery in the key is dead (if so just plug it into the hole in the dash) if it is the engine , it could be anything, if it is everything it has to be the battery(ies).
one last tip, try depressing the brake pedal when you press the button.

No machine is perfect. Hopefully you have warranty. Sounds like computer. Could be plug misfiring. Take it in, they do a diagnostic and know right away.

You do have to put gas in these cars once in a while. Aside from that, a little more info is needed.
