The Sabbath(Saturday) was created because God loves us so much and wants to spend quality time with us. Throughout the week we have school, work and other things that distract us from God. So he created one day that we could focus only on Him. Look at the scriptures, God creates man and the very next thing he does is create a Holy day of rest. Why? Because he was tired? or so that he could commune with them?
The purpose of the Sabbath is the fact that God wants to take time to be with us and he wants us to set aside time on His Holy day to devote 100% of our focus and attention on Him, our Creator.
1. The Sabbath is a day to cease our creating, working with the creation, and appreciate what God has done in the world and is doing in us. Genesis 2
2. Elaborate food preparation is to be done on the day before the Sabbath so that there is no baking or heavy cooking on the Sabbath. Exodus 16
3. The Sabbath is a time to lay our burdens down and rest. We should not do any servile work on the Sabbath. This includes our entire family, even our servants and beasts of burden and strangers who live among us. Jeremiah 17; Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5
4. The Sabbath is an holy convocation. We should meet and worship with others. Leviticus 23
5. We should be reverent and show God that we love, honor, and respect His authority. Psalm 89:7, Habakkuk 2:20
6. The Sabbath should be a day of delight and rejoicing, a day which we forsake our thoughts and words for God's thoughts and words. Isaiah 56, 58
7. The Sabbath is a time of healing. Matthew 12, Mark 1, 3, Luke 13, 14
8. We are not to buy or sell on the Sabbath. Nehemiah 13
9. The Sabbath is a time to do good and visit and comfort the sick. We should do spiritual work on the Sabbath, serving others. John 5
10. The Sabbath is a time of prayer. Acts 16:13
11. The Sabbath is a time to reason with others about spiritual principles, and for ministers to teach the word of God. Acts 17:2, 18:4, 11
12. The Sabbath is a time for Singing. Ephesians 5:19-20, Colossians 3:16, Psalms 92 is called the "Sabbath Psalm"

Ask yourself that alrady famous question: "What Would Jesus Do?" How did Jesus keep the Sabbath when He was on earth?
You know, there are some christians who think resting on the Sabbath means, literally, resting; that is sleeping during the whole day, staying at home. But Jesus never did that. Indeed, He healed and preached on the Sabbath.
The Jews in the times of Jesus had become very jealous about keeping the Sabbath day holy. According to them, a man could not walk more than a thousand steps, neither carry anything with him/her, etc. To the Fourth Commandment found in Exodus 20:8-11, they added it like 100 more norms and laws which turned the Sabbath day to be a burden for people. But Jesus did not follow these traditions. He was clear when He said that the Sabbath day was to enjoy it, not to be a burden. He said that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Unlike some people think, He did not mean we could pick any day we want as the Sabbath day, but He meant the Seventh day was made for man to enjoy it.
There are many things you can do on the Sabbath, and it would be up to your creative mind to make it fun. Just have this in mind: the main purpose for the Sabbath is to spend time with God. It's the day between God and you. What activities would help you to get a better relationship with your Lord? It may be Bible games, listening christian music, sermons, reading good christian books, studying your Bible, dismise the Sabbath on the beach, or in the mountains, in the naure where you may have some reflexion, etc. You may also organize a trip with your youth group to a hospital, a jail, or any place where people is so needed to know about a loving God, and know that there's somebody who cares for them. All the things listed above, you may do them along with your family also, you don't need to do them alone.
Help people on the Sabbath; I mean any day is good to help people, but none as best as in the Sabbath. That's what Jesus did: He healed people on the Seventh day.
If you would ask me what I do on the Sabbath, I would answer that it depends on the church activities, but lately I've been watching this website: www.amazingfacts.com it's an awsome webpage, it has videos, online books, links to other amazing websites too; I think I haven't even finished to see all its contents. Honestly, I love it. There's another webpage if you like to watch videos or listen to the radio: www.3abn.com
Oh!, and there's also this site (people have already given it to you), it is www.sabbathtruth.com; watch the videos at the right-top-corner of the page. We can learn more about the Sabbath.
I love to read too, and I've just got a lot of books to read, thanks God. And, to be honest, I do take a nap sometimes. But, as you see, there's more to do than just sleeping.
Maybe this webpage may help you, there is a question named "What can I do on the Sabbath?": http://www.amazingfacts.org/media/radio/question_archive.asp?tName=Sabbath
But it's very important not to skip church. These activities are besides attending church. Remember, church is like a fire: if we're out of it, we'll eventually cool down. Worshiping God and a social life among fellow christians is very iimportant to keep lite.
Well take care; and God bless you, my friend!

This has nothing to do with Ozzy, my dear Blacklion, although it did make me chuckle. Anyway, keeping the sabbath day holy in general means to devote a significant amount of the day to God. By either meditating, praying, studying the bible, including going to church. It also relates to the Jewish law of resting on the sabbath just like our Lord God did. It is an awesome rule, actually, even if you do not believe in any particular religion, or even God, for those Atheists out there. It's awesome because in this day and age of fast paced lifestyle, it is important for your mental health as well as your body to rest. This has to do alot with bringing balance in your life. You cannot work 24/7/365. which is why I asked the question of not going to work, since I'm under the weather and should allow my body to recover. hope this helps.

No! there is not any such verse. Hebrews 4:4-10 verse 8-9 talk of resting on the Sabbath as Eyes like flames suggested & verse 4 shows us the context of the Sabbath suitable from Genesis 2:a million-3 the place YHVH Elohim rested on the Sabbath day. it is likewise for all mankind from introduction. whether it become an indication for the 12 tribes of Israel, Hebrews mentions the names of various human beings in financial disaster 11 that weren't Hebrews or Israelites interior the line of religion & the Sabbath become for a majority of those to boot. Rahab is suggested & she actually become no longer an Israelite, she become a stranger who observed YHVH & got here into the covenant. with the point to declare the Sabbath is finished away with is thoroughly incorrect with out verse to assist it.

The bible is referring to the Jewish sabbath and theres alot that is included in keeping it holy. The basics are going to synagogue. No working including not using cars or any electronic items. You cant turn on lights. All cooking fires must be on from friday afternoon. You cant discuss work/business deals with ppl. It is a festive day where theres a scrumptious feast served after synagogue and the whole family bonds together with eating drinking and singing religious songs. Additionally it is customary to recite some bible passages with their commentaries. I know I was vague but thats the best I can do on answers.

The sabbath ( Saturday ) is to be kept holy by worshipping God, and by not buying or selling goods on that day. You can do family activities, have a big family dinner, get together with friends at each others' houses or have a big meal at your house of worship. Buying and selling are the main things that are prohibited or working for money.

In the days which the Bible was written, the Sabbath Day is when no work is to be done. It is a reference to the day when God had created all of the Earth, Sea, and Land. God took this day as rest. No further work was done. Sabbath Day is set forth to celebrate this day. Nowadays, it is far too impractical not to work or not to have business transactions. Not only that, but our country has far too many religions. It is against the Constitution for force our religion upon others. The Church now interprets that particular Commandment as simply going to Church during the time period of that day. (Sunday Mass) Of course, you are also supposed to spend time in order to study the Bible and devote oneself to prayer.

Traditionally, it meant a day without work, a day of rest, a day of attending service, and gathering with family and friends.
For me, it means that I take a walk in the park and reflect on my life or where I am going, and think about a higher power. I don't go to church, and sometimes I work on Sunday, for me this works. Yet, most importantly the message of 'keep holy the Sabbath day' means to me, is to reflect on your relationship with a higher power; whether that mean, God, Jesus, Buddha, Ghandi, whatever.
And, if you are a truly spiritual person, you should reflect on these things more than just 1 day a week.

You would have to study Judaism to know that, as such was no longer put upon Christians. The only day Christ said to keep was Niacin 14, which falls on the first full moon after the Spring equinox. This is the day of the Last Supper, but only one religion actually follows his instruction in regard to this. Instead, the other create their own holidays and observances at times which are convenient, or has become traditional since the third century.

The Sabbath is a Holy day and the day of rest. Only that does not mean a day of rest for humans. It is a holy day that is Gods day of rest. We keep it holy by using that day especially to do things for God or spend time with God. How do you do things for God? By serving others.
When Jesus healed, a crippled on the sabbath and the synagogue ruler complained that he was breaking the law, Jesus told them that if one of their animals needed water they would tend to them, and the life of the old woman was more important.
Luke 13
10On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." 13Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
14Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath."
15The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"
17When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.
