All the people bitching and moaning that people coming to America need to "LEARN ENGLISH", need to realize that English isn't the official language of America. I think it should be, but until Congress decides to show some balls on this issue, no one should be REQUIRED to learn English. There are plenty of huge areas in most large cities where you can survive speaking only Spanish (or even Chinese, for that matter), so no one really HAS to learn English.
That being said, I don't know of any classes at Harvard taught in Spanish (aside from Spanish classes), or of any Fortune 500 companies that conduct their meetings in any language other than English....so if you really wanted to get ahead, learning English would be the way to go....

It shouldn't be a requirement for those of us that speak English, and already live in America to learn to speak Spanish. But learning Spanish or any other language would not be a bad idea or any of us. Mainly due to the fact that when people from other countries come to the USA we expect them to learn English. I don't feel it should be a requirement for them, but in order for them to live here and be sufficient people need to be able to speak English....

In high school, you are required to study a second language. However, they do not require you to take Spanish.
I do not think Spanish should be a requirement to live in America. In the area of California that I live, there is a HUGE Hmong population. However, the Cantonese language is not offered to study anywhere.
There are people of many races in every part of the U.S.
I think the main thing is to have a one language we all should use...like ENGLISH. That was the point, from the beginning, right?

First to the Idiot who said America is a continent, North America is a continent, America is a country. Secondly, and to the point of the question no Americans should only have to know English, but if you plan on going abroad you should learn the native language of the country where you are heading. I am tired of people from foreign countries having more rights than we do.

No!!! I think that we should not have to learn Spanish or any other language. We live in America where we speak English and I think that it should be our official language. When we go to other countries even thought they may have people who can speak english to help us to do well in their country we have to learn their language

No, it should be the other way around., lived in Germany for 3 years, military, I was a visitor in their country and it was my resposibility to learn to speak their language. If I go to live in Mexico I feel I should learn their language. This country is a truily headed for some serious issues if we don't stick together & let the politicians hear our complaint. If you want to live in our country, speak our native tongue, respect our laws & quit whining about it, pay your taxes, and quit coming here for a hand-out! You want a great life, work for it, 99% of the Good Old Americans have done that, and we did it speaking English !!!!

No. It should be a requirement to be able to read, write and speak English. But the INS do not make this mandatory. In just about every other country the national language must be spoken. The US are cowed by the claims that it is discriminatory. No wonder we've going to hell in a high hat.

No, it should be a requirement to know English. There are many immigrants who come here from all countries, why should we give special preference to Spanish? Also, many immigrants have worked their butt off to learn English, will they be dissuaded from coming here because now they have to learn not one, but two, languages? Multilingual is great, but multilingual to accomodate one group of people is not.
