The term here is onychomycosis and yes its contagious. Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is another fungus group that is contagious. But these fungi are all around (especially locker rooms) and not everyone gets infected so a lot of time there's something else in play. (exposure when immune system is weak is one theory). Wear flip flops in wet areas rather than going barefoot and keep your feet as dry as possible.

yes it is contagious. If socks are shared (even if washed). If shoes are shared and if you shower after someone who has nail fungus you may get it.

it is caused by a virus-so it would seem to be!
