I don't have any facts or figures. But I don't think internet users are stingy, they are regular people. Possibly the stingy ones are people that still are too much of a tightwad to get a computer, and an internet connection. I think there were large sums of money donated to the families of those who lost thier love ones in 9/11. Unfortunately there were too many scams also.

People are just to wary knowadays of all the different scams that are out there. I think a lot of people donate money but it's more through trusted organizations such as Red Cross/Blue Shield, Salvation Army, and their local churches etc.. Most people (including myself) will not give money to some unknown person on the internet claiming it's for a good cause

internet users are normal people.
and like other normal people, they donate when they are convinced
- that they are supporting a noble cause
- that their contribution will make a difference
getting a confirmation on both counts is much easier when you can go and see for yourself the impact of your contribution. The fact that this is hard to do online makes donation that much harder
