I found this in wikipedia.org regarding the S&W 500...

"While firearms of this size can scare potential shooters with the recoil, the advanced design of the firearm helps in counteracting recoil felt by the shooter. This includes the sheer weight of the firearm, use of rubber grips, the forward balance, and the use of a compensator. (Traded for a full muzzle brake on the performance center model) These additions make the firearm entirely manageable for those accustomed to the shooting of large caliber handguns, but still extreme for an inexperienced shooter."

Well I have shot both the Standard and the Performance Center Model 500 .50 cal S&W. Both are great guns. I had the standard ported by Mag-Na-Port in Michigan and had some detail work done to it and it made all the difference in the world. The Performance Center gun is pretty good out of the factory but needed a little trigger work.

The KICK is going to all depend on the ammunition and Grain size you decide to shoot out of it. I have shot everything from 300gr Hollow to 650gr solids and the ammount of recoil goes up exponentially with the larger ammo. 300gr=.44cal Ruger Red Hawk 650gr=.500 Krieghoff Nitro(Double Gun).

We did some penitration tests on Elephant Skulls in South Africa a Year ago and the Solids will pass Completely through the skull from front to back as well as side to side.

There great guns and if you throw a stout red dot scope on it you can hit anything out to about 150 yards.(Depending on the round)

no sorry i havent, although i own a .44 magnum ruger redhawk. im told the recoil is similar. i know the round is much bigger but so is the gun. my .44 with some hot loads has quite a jolt. but its nothing you cant handle. my wife shoots my .44 and enjoys it. she doesnt shoot it often but she does shoot it. if you do not have experience with large bore revolvers you should find a .44 magnum or a 45 long colt and fire it a few times before shooting that massively awesome .500 i do envy you for getting one and wish i had one but at the same time i have a .44 that i only shoot hot loads when hunting, i like reduced loads for target shooting. you may end up doing the same thing. definately post an update on how that hand cannon shoots.

I have shot the gun, the recoil isn't as monsterous as one may think, even though the muzzle velocity of these beasts are around THREE times that or a .44 magnum. go to youtube.com and search for .500 S&W magnum there are a couple videos, specifically one of a bunch of guys in the woods who shoot it at gallons of water. The recoil is noticable in these videos, but I dont think it's anything in comparison to it's extreme energy. .3 jugs of water will stop a .357, they shoot 7, and it doesn't stop the bullet, that gun is absolutely beautiful, get ready to shell out alot of cash for ammo though 8(

I have a .500 Magnum Linebaugh "Bisley" that is both more powerful and lighter than the S&W .500. My revolver obviously kicks much more than yours. The S&W is so heavy, it absorbs much of the recoil. Some magazine articles say it kicks no worse than a .44 Magnum S&W M-29.

Fired 6 rounds from a sw .500 at an indoor pistol range. ears rang afterwords but recoil wasn't as bad as i thought. Don't expect to run 200 rounds threw it in one range session tho.

It is a great gun I've only had one opportunity to shoot it. The recoil isn't bad thanks to the muzzle break and the rubber grip. Shoot if I lived in Grizzly country I would sure own one.
