I think allowing them to earn the money would be better.
As i was growing up (im still in my 20's lol) money was never just handed over to me. I always had to earn it, at the time i thought it was unfair, i mean who wants to do chores for a few bucks, right?
and all my friends had to do was ask, and money was automatically handed to them. But doing chores for money taught me a life long valuable lesson that never faded. I know how hard it is to earn a buck, and while i scrubbed the bathtub or cleaned the dishes, the money i earned .i didn't blow on sneakers, candy ,video games, or at the mall. I spent it on things i needed.(don't get me wrong i did splurge from time to time, gimme a break i was a kid lol)but not as much as you would expect. I guess knowing how hard i worked for it, i couldn't stand the idea of wasting it on garbage. I learned the value of a dollar, you can't beat that lesson with a bat! lol....plus it's a + for both you and the kids. take a little of the work load off of you, im sure you're a hard working mom. but definately negotiate how much you're willing to pay ..

I think kids should be given chores around the house as a way to show them responsibility. It's important for the whole family to pitch in to keep a house running properly. And chores are a part of that. I don't see anything wrong after a certain age for them to start earning some of the things they want. Giving them an allowance, to me, teaches them that money isn't just handed to them in life, they need to earn it. It's another one of life's lessons on responsibility. Presents were always nice to get for me, but I felt really good when I mowed the yard and earned money for that two dollar plastic pair of high heels when I was a little girl. My parents bought me things now and then too, but they gave me chores to do if I wanted money all the time to buy something. I think it's more of a combined thing for teaching responsibility.

CHORES!!!! How old are they? You'll want to make the chores something appropriate to age... like a 5 yr old could help you dust but a 10 yr old could do the vacuuming alone, that type of thing... with my son he feeds the pets and then does a few other things as needed, plus has to keep his room neat. It's also a good idea to help them manage the money they earn so they'll learn to do it on their own. If you go to church, a percentage to be to tithe (or donate somehow if you're not religious) then save some for future and some for a special purchase of a toy or other item they really want. Of course if they blow it on something silly hopefully they'll learn a lesson from that too! Good luck.

I think it is a good idea to give them some chores to earn their allowance and teach them some responsibility. Not just give it to them for nothing.

I don't have kids but I don't really understand this question.
Can't you give your kids allowance for sucessfully completing chores around the house? If you can make up a routine it would teach them responsibility.
Such as Sue you take out the garbage every Sunday. If you take it out without me asking you to do it you get $5, if I have to ask you you get $2.50.

Have them do chores in order to get an allowance. This teaches them not to rely on having their every desire answered but to work for the things they want.
This will definitely teach them responsibility and prepare them for the job market in the distant future.

Let them do chores then give them allowance as their pay/reward for what they have did. This is the best way to teach them how hard you as a mother/father earns money. They will learn how to appreciate the money. They will never spend the money crazly. If they want to buy anything they will think twice as the allowance is consider as their own salary...So,the conclusion is give them allowance for what they have did!!!Yeah, this the way to teach them responbility.

give them an allowance according to the chores they do around the house. that way they learn responsibilty and they're not always asking you for money.

My parents did both. If we wanted money we had to earn it, this was done by doing "chores" around home. It taught us to realise that money doesn't grow on trees, if we really wanted something we had to work for it.
They will both respect and responsibility - and you won't have to do as much stuff around home so that's a bonus!
