The email that you received is very true. And for those of you who don't agree...do a little research. All of your typical, well known brands are KILLING pets. Here are the brands that I would HIGHLY recommend you stay away from:
-Iams
-Eukanuba
-Sience Diet
-Diamond
-Kirkland
-Pro Plan
-Nature's Recipe
-Dog Chow
-Ol Roy
-Walthams
-Medical/Technical/Royal Canin
-Purina
-Pedigree
-Alpo
-Maxximum Nutrition
-Kibbles'n'Bits
and so on.
These foods ALL contain fillers (corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, woodshaving, peanut shells, etc), by products (animal feet, feathers, beaks, etc preserved with chemicals), chemical preservatives BHA/BHT and Ethoxiquin (proven to cause cancer and other illnesses), and not only that, these companies have reputations for poor quality/consistency and sanitation and some have even been accused of inhumane animal testing.
These foods are disgusting and are the major cause of all health problems in dogs include diabetes, cancer, heart disease and obesity, bone and joint problems, skin irritations and loss of hair, tooth decay, and so on.
People who truly care about their pets have come to realize that just like humans, dogs can't survive and live healthy on diets that mimic a human eating McDonalds every day.
Here is a list of some foods that would be included (or should be) on that list of 9 that the email talks about:
-Innova
-Karma
-California Natural
-Wellness
-Wysong
-Blue Buffalo
-Canidae
-Merrick
-Solid Gold
-Evolve
and a few others.
These foods have far surpassed the days when Iams and Science Diet were the best on the market. These newer products are ALL made with human grade, whole, fresh ingredients. They do not contain fillers and by-products and the companies would NEVER use chemical preservatives.
So, if you want to read a little more about this issue and learn the TRUTH check out ANN M MARTIN'S book "Foods Pets Die For". It will tell you everything you need to know. Including the fact that 100s of thousands of tons of euthanized animals are used in dog food...ever wonder what meat meal/by-products were??

Yes, this is true, Stockton, CA newspaper did a report on this just a little while ago. They also use the plastic bags and containers the animals were brought in, they do not bother to take them out of the bags. Not to mention the medication an animal has been fed prior to being euthaniazed also end up in dog and cat food. One of the main ways these chemicals are getting put into animal food is by the flea collars the dogs and cats already have on them, they do not take those off either. They usually spray a chemical similar to bleach over the animals before they get rendered. These plants use dogs, cats, elephants, horses, roadkill and anything this is not the article from the paper but one describing what is used in dog foods and what the ingredients really mean. else.http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients. and this website also http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients . The foods that do not use euthaniazed animals, roadkill, etc.. are Natural Balance, Canidae, Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Innova and some other super premium foods. Sadly, yes we are putting many harmful chemicals and discusting things in dog and cat food, that do not belong there. Hopefully this will stop some day!

I want what is best for my dogs and I have spent several years researching dog foods, taking nutritionist courses for dogs/animals and there are several dogs foods that are commerical that I would not even feed to my worst enemy. Most of the commerical foods will NOT disclose their meat manufacturer source which to any educated person is a huge red flag. Any of the foods that I feed my dogs over the years I made sure I was able to obtain that information which is actually crucial. Many of the commerical foods use meats preserved with BHT,BHA, Ethoxyquin, and all 3 are known carcinogens BANNED from human consumption. The dog food manufacturers do not need to put it on the ingredients list if they did not add it, so they do not want to disclose to the consumer the meat source that did add the ingredients. An independent study just released which was done on dog foods showed that 9 out of 10 commerical dog foods have excessive, unhealthy and TOXIC levels of fluoride. Also companies like Eukanuba/Iams have been in trouble for inhumane and UNNECESSARY animal testing. They continue to do so. I will NOT support animal cruelty and those companies continue to perform horrible experiments on dog. puppies and cats/ And no the experiments have nothing to do with the safety of their foods. I feed my dogs a RAW diet which is completely safe if handled in the correct manner. It has drastically helped my dogs and improved their health. All in all after 2 years of studies, courses throughout the country, I would not feed my dogs a commerical diet and that is for many reasons. But everyone is entitled to their opinions and beliefs.

If this would be true, that dead animals are utilized for dog and cat food, than I would like to know, how the pet food companies divide all the dead animals amongst them. If it would be a roadkill that would be used in pet food, what pet food company would be getting that. Or is it just a big Cooperation who is collecting all the dead animals and then the pet food companies buys the already mixed products from them? Meat buy products could be very well bones and intestines etc. from a slaughterhouse (pork, beef, lamb etc.) Sometimes people send e-mails to promote their own products or they are affiliates for a specific product and would like you to click on their website to make money.

i dont' think most of this email you have is true. For one, i know that animals are 99% of the time either buried or cremated. If the owners want to bury the dog, they have 2-4 days to do it before they are taken away. If not, they are usually cremated withing 24-36 hours of being put down. I've worked with and known people that work a the crematoriums and they said that animals are usually done pretty quickly. Also, if the dogs are put into the food, that means the food companies would have to pick up the dogs/cat/etc from teh pounds or vet offices or crematoriums before the bodies decompose. Not very likely really. As for the 9 brands, there are more than 9 companies that are known for their formulas being of the same quality as human food. I think you got a bogus email. I hope you didn't agree to anything when you opened the links.

Here is a website that lists several sellers of 'meat and bone meal'..you can see from their own product descriptions whether you want to feed that to your pet or not..> http://www.macraesbluebook.com/search/product_company_list.cfm?Prod_Code=4852500
Here is an interesting informational article> http://www.petpromiseinc.com/about_faq.htm
Each person can make their own decision as to how to feed their pet..
However, cost should not be the deciding factor..as premium dog foods cost more per bag, but actually cost less per month to feed than discount foods, such as Old Roy...
I found this government site..telling of the processing of 'meat and bone meal> http://www.cs.umd.edu/projects/fsrac/procs/rendering.html
It seems that the workers have to wear masks to keep from being poisoned by the chemicals!
