simple.. the bigger the airplane, the more people, luggage and boxes they can move around. Most of the cost of operating an aircraft is in the take off. That is when they need to burn the most fuel to get the aircraft off the ground. So the more they can fit in one aircraft, the more profit they make off of that flight. Also, the less expense they have, the cheaper the airfare and shipping cost are.
Second would be the crew, insurance, maintenance etc.. The more people on one plane, the less planes they have to fly, there for less employees, etc etc.

It's so easy:
Bigger planes with more advanced fuel-efficient engines load more pax and cargo than the old ones at the same price per a single flight.
Result: Less expensive fares (couse the same or even smaller cost of a single flight could be distributed onto more people).
This is a simpe answer but it's far more complex and time-consuming question.
