I consider myself a lady, and I'm not impressed by a man who drinks heavily at all. If he does have a cocktail before dinner, ordering a sweet frilly drink just makes him look like a kid who has never had anything to drink before. Listen to vsc up above, she speaks truth.

The only thing that would impress me is a man who obviously knows how to order a decent bottle of wine without any help from anyone... but who is secure and open-minded enough to ask my opinion about it anyway. Major brownie points.

Order one that you like and don't use the straw. As Dana Carvey said (Saturday Night Live) it's hard to look manly when you're sucking on a straw! lol! (Maybe work into a discussions about cocktails before your date, then you will know what she likes too, but for pity's sake, don't order for her on your date, unless she has stated specifically what she wants!) I don't know what men drink in posh restaurants, but she may be more impressed if you order a nice bottle of wine, something that goes with the meal, red wine for beef, white wine for chicken and fish.

As a lady myself, let me tell you that no matter how superficial it sounds, I'm definitely a little turned off by men who order:

Anything sweet.
Anything involving a blender.
Liquor mixed with anything besides tonic.
Cheap beer.
Anything in a fancy glass.
Anything with fruit or plastic trinkets dangling from the rim.

Be a pimp and order a bottle of red wine for the table. Or if ordering just for yourself, order Johnny Walker Black Label or above (or another manly liquor) on the rocks. Or a good imported beer, if it's a casual meal.

If you want to impress a lady, I wouldn't order a cocktail. They're for chicks. Order a beer, a fine scotch on the rocks (Glenlivet) or maybe something like a seven and seven or a jack and coke. Don't order a Cosmo, a Midori sour, or anything colored.

Seriously, ignore the advices about Cosmopolitans, champagne mimosas, and margaritas. If a guy I am going to dinner with orders those, I would think that he doesn't know how to drink and there are not enough man in him. Order something like Bombay Saphire rocks or Grey Goose rocks (or whichever vodka you prefer), or Jameson's rocks. However, if you don't usually drink, then don't (you are risking to get drunk and embarrass yourself). The truth is your drink order would not impress a girl, your manners, your overall behavior will. Oh, and tip well. Generosity is always appreciated.

champagne
mimosa
champagne cocktail

With dinner, a nice red wine.

After dinner, a grasshopper for dessert

Have time to sit and chat for a while? Have a cup of coffee or two with her - and pay for the cab to take you both home - her first.

This will do four things:
* It will show her you know what to drink for a special occasion

* It will show her you are a responsible drinker and know that even ONE cocktail is a no-no if you are driving.

* It will show her that you are a gentleman first and foremost. You expect nothing in return for the fine dinner and lovely conversation.

* Since you finished with a cup of coffee or two, your objective was never to get her drunk, nor to have one too many, either.

Trust me!

Real men don't drink cocktails, so impressing her would be difficult that way. Go for something straight up, or a brandy.

Bombay Martini, on the rocks, dirty. Ignore all that Cosmopolitan and Grasshopper nonsense. Those are chick drinks. And forget the margaritas unless you're in a Mexican restaurant.

do lot listen to rest of them mate! You know how to handle the night you are are bloke and it will all come together for ya pal. As for the cocktail take it from me a strawberry margarita in a salted rim glass for the lady and a lemon margarita in a salted rim glass for you. The strawberry shows her you see her as delicate and a sweet lady and the lemon shows your manhood flavours. They are both top quality cocktails and they are 100% crowd pleases. all the best son.
