bientot means "soon," so "see you soon" is the best translation. But both of them I think work - I'll have to ask a native French speaker if there is a differences in mindset between "see you soon" and "see you later." I have a feeling that to the French, they are one and the same.

A bientôt means "see you soon".
This can be used when you are going to see someone in the near future but not necessarily within the next day or so. For example I just received a letter from someone who is coming to visit me in 3 weeks. She ended her letter with "à bientôt".
If you are going to see someone later the same day you would normally say "à tout à l'heure". I saw "à plus tard" in a response above. This is also good if you are going to be seeing someone later the same day.

A bientôt = See you soon (usually when you don't know exactly when you will see each other again, or if the next meeting is not too close)
See you later = Ã plus tard (when you will meet again later the same day)
See you in a while (very close) = Ã tout de suite. (" Ã tout' " in spoken language. pronunciation = a toute ). you use this expression when you will see each other again in a few minutes or within the next hour.

"à bientôt" means "See you soon".
"Ã plus tard" could be a translation for "See you later".
