No one can accurately calculate the amount of calories you will burn at rest so I cannot say that the 5 lbs is an accurate number. However, it is ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, without a doubt true that the more muscle a person has the more calories that person will burn while at rest.

This is why resistance training is essential in burning fat. Cardio will only burn calories during the workout and for about 20-30 minutes after the workout. Resistance training will burn calories during the workout and for up to 24 hours after the workout.

What happens is when you lift weights you are breaking down your muscle fibers and for the next 24 or so hours your muscles are working hard to fix themselves, hence you burn calories while you sleep.

I don't know about the numbers, but it is true that the more muscle you have the more calories you burn at rest.

This sounds like an old wives tale

Actually I know it is false. Because your basal metabolic rate, the amount you burn with out doing immediate exercise, changes based on how much exercise you do regularly. So this could vary alot.
