The easiest, longest lasting, and most beneficial to your future relationship and sanity, is to teach the SIT command, and require the dog to SIT for one minute, before every feeding..
the way to a stubborn dog's heart, is through his tummy!
You see, he can't impose HIS dominance, when it is YOU holding the food bowl..Feeding twice per day, and enforcing the 'sit before eating' rule, re-establishes your authority every day..twice per day..That makes it just too hard for him to get the big head, and decide to be boss..

'the best way to show dominance over any dog is to put the dog on their side and lay over them on your hands and knees. This shows the dog you are the alpha dog and master. Also if the dog is challenging you with barking or eye contact, you must out stair the dog and get the dog to look away and be quiet. It takes time and practice but both of these techniques work. Good luck

a lot of the suggestions so far are going to get you bitten or worse. If you have an older dog that is or was the alpha dog at any point recently, he will take it as a direct threat. DON'T look him in the eye and growl or don't hold him down. If he was an ALPHA dog anytime recently, YOU WILL GET BITTEN! Best way that I have seen is to put him on a lead/leash and walk him around. When he pulls on you the first time, stop, wait for him to sit down, then start walking again. If he pulls again, stop again and wait for him to sit down. If he growls at you or does any action you don't feel comfortable with, remember you have that lead/leash in your hand and give it a quick jerk with a firm "NO". When entering/leaving a home, YOU go out first then him. If he jumps on you, back off and let him fall or move out of the way. DON'T put food in front of him and wait for him to sit because, again, if he was an alpha dog recently, he will take it offensivly and see it as a challange because you have his food in your hands. If you dont already have one, get a kennel or a crate or a cage. Feed him in the kennel or just outside the crate or cage. Also, if you don't have one yet, get either a Dominant Dog collar or a fur saver chain. This will help when he wan't to be too aggressive or assertive. Also, let him walk around a day or two while dragging a leash everywhere he goes even inside the home or out in the yard. Correct him when it needs to be done not when you think it should or when you want to. Again, don't stare them in the eyes and growl or tease them with food, or try to hold them down if he was and alpha dog any time recently because you can and probably will get either intimidated or bitten.

If you are a dog, then you would have to fight it to become the dominant dog right? If you want to know how you show your dog that you're boss, then just be consistant in your commands and the gentle way that you discipline. You and your dog will bond eventually.

There are many ways, there is not just one good one .Its about how you interact with your dog in a variety of situations. Here are a few key ones.1Your dog should not enter or exit doors or gates BEFORE you ,Alphas (YOU) should lead the pack.2While walking your dog should willingly walk next to or behind you, unless you give him the O.K. to walk in front,And only when you O.K. it.3. you should be able to put you dog on his side or back and put your hand on his neck (Like a bite) and have him comfortably "Submit". an omega dog will not fuss if the Alpha does this. and many, many more. Watch " The Dog Whisperer" on the national geographic channel. Cesar Millan regularly deals with this issue.

Honestly, Chetco and Vail have the best answers. Like Vail said, most of the above will get you bit if your dog is very dominant.
The only other thing I could think of is to be consistent in your dealings with the dog. Getting hyper or excited is only going to make the situation worse. Be firm and calm, but put a bit of force in your voice when saying "No" and put a bit of a smile in your voice when you praise.

I have heard that the leader of the wild pack is always first in everything, from leading during walks (so make sure the dog always heels and doesn't drag you), to eating, etc... So, don't baby the dog, I have heard, as they are actually happier/more comfortable with you being the boss at all times.
I have heard that not breaking eye contact first is one way, but I am not sure about that...

Lay the dog on its back, put your hand on its chest and hold him there. In a firm voice tell him "No". Do not let up until the dog stops struggling (kinda goes limp). Also, when you are entering or exiting the house with your dog, always go out first and then let the dog out to show him who the leader is.

I agree with getting on top of your dog and going in and out first, but you can also make sure not to let your dog in bed with you. A dog trainer told me letting your dog in your bed makes the dog see you more as a litter mate instead of the guardian/owner.

You do not have to be mean to show a dog who's boss.
You put the fear of God into your dog w/firm voice & commands. Obedience train really helps.
You spend many and hour w/him also in training & grooming him. TLC goes along way.
