I just downloaded OpenOffice.org. What are some other great but free alternatives to expensive software?

I just recently had to restore my computer and I lost software that came on the computer. I'm not interested in purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of software. What are some great but free alternatives to expensive software, that I can download off the internet. I heard its out there, but can anyone tell me where to find it? Thank you so much.

OpenSource. Go for opensource operating systems .. you'll get all the softwares - media players,office,editors,compilers for free..
