A golf mat is significantly more forgiving than Turf. You will get away with fat shots, you will never get grass between the blade and the ball and all lies are perfect. Because most mats have a heavy rubber under coating the fat shot bounces the iron off the mat into the ball while in turf the club dig into the ground and rapidly decelerates. There is very little difference hitting of a tee mat or turf.

way more forgiving. Think about it. You can make big time contact with the mat behind the ball and still hit the ball decent. But make that same sort of contact from turf and watch the ball go 15 yards.

Mat is more in fact if you hit the ball fat on a matt it still looks like a good shot, when you hit that same shot on turf you get a big divot and no distance.
