Is there an anxiety medication you can take that works right away instead of having to wait 2 months for it to start working? Paxil, Zoloft, ..all those medications.. you have to take for like 6 - 8 weeks just to get them to start working.

Don't laugh, but I was watching a tv show and this guy was getting on a flight and he had some kind of anxiety pill that he took beforehand that helped him. Is there something like this? I could use these so much for things such as presentations I have to do and job interviews. I get really nervous and sweat buckets. =(

Xanax is a very strong drug, and I do not recommend it because it had addictive properties...

Colonopin works well, and is low dose, so you do not go into a job interview looking like you just took a Valium (which works as well, but it pretty strong). Colonopin comes in 2-5mg forms (I think, I know about the 2mg), and it works quickly (10-15 minutes).

However, I would consult with your doctor, and if you are pre-disposed to having addictions through medications, make sure your doctor knows that.

I suffer anxiety attacks as well, so I know the feeling of "ohmygodwhatamIgoingtodo?", shaking, sweating, rapid heartbeat, confused thoughts...

There is never any harm in asking your doctor for help.

Oh, and my choir teacher from high school once told me "Once you stop having "stage fright", it is time to get off the stage". People get nervous before public speaking. Most fear it more than death itself. That is perfectly normal. However, hyperventilating, rapid heartbeat, and confusion is a more serious sign of anxiety. Make sure you know the difference.

Best of luck to you!

Xanax works great. It's usually prescribed for severe anxiety to "get you over the hump."

Then you stop taking it, and the withdrawal makes you realize that the anxiety you had before was not so bad.

Basically, if your anxiety attacks are so bad that you can't leave the house, then it'll help, but only short term. But with any drugs that you can take long term, you're going to have to wait for results. And keep trying different drugs and different combinaitons of drugs until you find what works. It can take a long time, so just be patient, make sure you have a Dr. you can talk to. Good luck.

Most pills that work right away are addictive, such as valium, etc. If anxiety is periodic then something like that would work well. If your anxiety is long term (occurs most of the day and more days then not), then you would need a medication such as paxil, etc. I would avoid all addictive type medications if you have any history yourself or family history of addicton.

Benzodiazapines. They take about 15 minutes to work im told and you can take them when having a panic attack, or just for anxiety. For anxiety theres three forms of treatment, anti-depressants, benzodiazapines and councelling. (not a fan of the first and third). Then a mood stabilizer or anti-phychotic if they don't work, or after a month or so to take you off the benzodiazapines. So search it up because it IS textbook short term. You may of heard of Xanax, Klonopin, Valium... Good luck

I was put on medication for an anxiety disorder. They put me on an antidepressant that took a month or two to work effectively but while i was on this they also gave me alprazalam which works right away at calming you down, until the other started working.

The only problem with benzodiazepines is that the only treat the physical symptoms of anxiety while leaving the cognitive part of it lingering. I personally use klonopin for anxiety and have been on SSRI's for anxiety. If you have very bad anxeity talk to your doctor about going on an SSRI and depending on how conservative he is, talk to him about prescribing a benzodiazepines for use in the first couple of weeks of taking the SSRI. Sometimes in the first couple of weeks of starting an SSRI your anxiety may be increased and the benzodiazepines would help you get through that stage a little more comfortably.

yes they do have some, but the point of putting u can paxil, etc. To prevent the attacks not to treat them on set! Many people get addicted to the benzo family, but they have meds that are non narc such as inderall, for prn, buspar. One of the good ones i have heard and seen miralces is lexapro. Sometimes we have to be patience, i think like how i was before treatment. It has tooken me yrs to get off klonopin, Call ur md for further advise for GAD drugs

Well, the meds you mention are antidepressants, rather than anti-anxiety. Valium doesn't take two months to work. That's probably what the guy took to get through his flight.

You know, we have the same problem...anxiety. I'm taking alprazolam. Whenever I take 250 micrograms of it... my heart palpitations and at times, I feel sleepy. But, since I'm taking it for a year already...the effects are only minimal so I need to increase dose. Whenever I get anxious, my neck feels stiff and when my head turns around or moves, it trembles. I don't know why.

klonopin, ativan, and xanax, but all three are addictive and people can build tolerance to them. So over long periods of time the doses have to increase. It takes 15 minutes for xanax to work.
