I'm not really sure exactly what you are wanting to achieve. Is it that you want your exboyfriend back or the affection that he once had shown you?
Affection came when you had the relationship. When you ended it you relinquished/rejected not only the things that you didn't want, but the affection that he was giving to you. By going and expecting him to be affectionate, and wanting to stay 'friends,' you potentially can cause him emotional pain. Another way to put it is: teasing. It isn't fair of you to ask this of him. You really can't have your cake and eat it too, in this sense.
If you want your exboyfriend back, getting him back may be extremely difficult, depending on why and how you broke up with him in the first place. Did you break up with him for a good or petty reason? If it was a good reason, ie., he cheated, he was being mean, overberring, controlling, etc...you need to ask yourself is getting back together with this person really such a good idea. If it was petty (not that this doesnt have validity...you could be just honest with yourself)...you liked someone else, your family didn't like him, your friends didn't like him...etc.
One way to try to gain the relationship back is to ask. You must put all your cards on the table. But, depending on the circumstances of the situation (i.e., he could be seeing someone else at this point or he really has the belief that he will not go out with you again...since you might turn around and hurt him again--you bad mouthed him to friends and he heard about it through the grapevine--whatever) you have to understand the reality of the situation--that you might not ever get this individual or his affection back.

Call him and tell him how you feel. I'm a dude, and I'd want to know. Maybe he feels the same way and neither of you know it. He's waitin for you and your waiting for him. Trust me call him...
