I hear that the year is no longer based on Christ any more but rather the common era. What once would have been called BC(before Christ) is now called BCE (before the common era) The athiest that do these things are trying to get America to run on a different system as well. Sorry this doesn't answer yur question, but I thought it to be interesting

Persians have been keen on the idea and importance of having a calendar system throughout their recorded history. They were among the first cultures to employ a solar calendar, and have long favored a solar approach rather than lunar or lunisolar models. In general, the sun has always had an important symbolic significance in the Iranian culture.

In Jewish/Hebrew calender, supposedly number of years since creation the year 5767 just started on Sunday.

But here in Israel we mostly use the "civilian" calender, which means 2006.
