i dont think so. im planning to get a gl2 soon (hopefully), so ive done lots of research on it. i think the panasonic pv-gs400 might be pretty close to it in value, as in functions for the price. however, they are hard to buy now (ebay is pretty much the only place now), and as gl2s drop in price, its a good choice, especially if you get a good condition used gl2. although canon doesnt have too good of a consumer line, i think they really put the effort into the prosumer line to make them good cams, instead of just flashy cameras with auto modes for consumers. if you have the money, get an xh a1. its an upgrade of the gl2 in its shape, but it records HD and has (of course) many manual functions for amateur filmmakers (i gotta love canon). you can go to www.camcorderinfo.com for more info on these cams. im planning to get a gl2 and hope you do too! (or an A1, even better).

Wow, it must be nice to have that kind of money to spend on a video camera!

I have a lot of experience with Canon cameras, but only the SLRs and 1 digital camera and Canon printers. I have never had a problem with them. As a matter of a fact, I would recommend a Canon still photo camera over any other just from my 30 year experience with them.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help answer your question.

When I bought my camcorders, I bought Sony(s) because I knew they were better and I have not had any problem with either of mine (I have two).

I think, with the amount of money you are investing you should see if you can find a Consumer's Report on the Canon before you buy it.

I took a look at the Best Buy website and they have two Sony models to choose from. One is only a couple hundred dollars more and it may have close to the same features as the Canon, then they have another one that goes for about a thousand more and it looks like it's biggest advantage is being able to shoot in widescreen.

I have had nothing but trouble with Canons. Their customer support is also a joke. If you haven't bought one already, I would strongly suggest looking further...Maybe a Sony...
