We recently got a Newfoundland/Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and I've been giving her a bath once a week because she loves to tromp around with our two boys and tends to get really dirty. But, my husband heard that you aren't supposed to bath a dog too often because it dries out their skin. So, my question is: How often is not too often?

Weekly bathing is not a problem as long as you are using an appropriate shampoo for dogs. If you dog does not having any types of skin issues, I wouldn't worry. Make sure that you are drying the coat thoroughly after bathing so that the skin does not suffer, and if possible, use a moisturizing shampoo.

If you notice flakes of dandruff & they are dry & tend to fall right off, then you are drying out the skin. If the flakes appear greasy & thick, she may have oily skin, or may be producing extra oil to compensate for the bathing.

In most cases, weekly bathing is not going to be a problem, but as a compromise, you can give her a 'dry bath'. There are many products available for this, it involves cleaning solution that is rubbed into the coat, but doesn't require water or rinsing.

Also, I have found for my dogs that a pet wipe works well between bathing. They are made especially for dogs & contain lanolin to help protect the coat, & have no alcohol (do not use baby wipes, which have alcohol & would dry out the coat & skin).

Puppy: Never, ever bathe a puppy less than 6 weeks of age unless directed by your vet with good cause!!!!!!

Bathing: Contrary to popular belief, the more often you bathe with anything soapy or sudsy, the more likely you are to have persitant smell... why? because the oil glads are having to work harder against your efforts and the dog could develop dry skin/dermatitis.
I recommend bathing once a month & only use Dr Bonner's liquid or any conditioning brand of doggie-shampoo without perfume. In addition, no matter what you use, thin it with water BEFORE APPLICATION... short haired dogs ratio of 1 part shampoo to 5 parts shampoo.... longer hair, even more water.... Then rinse, and I mean rinse first with water mixed with a small amount of baking soda, then rinse again & again until you can sqeeze your dogs fur in all places & there is no residue of any kind. My dog is short haired & it takes a 20 minute rinse with a shower-massage for final rinse.

Brush your dog every day, and when shedding at least twice a day. The dog will smell less & will love you for the attention. Limit bathing to once per month (see above) and if the dog gets dirty & needs other bathing, only rinse with water

your husband is right when he says bathing a dog too often can dry out their delicate skin. But once a week is just fine. That is how often I bathe mine. Just make sure you are using a shampoo designed for dogs(preferably one that moisturizes). I use one by hartz and it has little microbeads in it that help moisturize the dog's skin. It is just a couple dollars at walmart, target, etc. Just keep an eye on the dog. If you notice his or her skin flaking or getting dry(just like a humans would) reduce baths to every other week or so. Other than that you are doing fine!!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7J4

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I think you're supposed to bath them once every 3-4 weeks... but I'm not 100% on that. Brushing them, though, will help keep them from shedding. And I also heard on here that you aren't supposed to use shampoo every time you give the dog a bath either... like every other time or something like that.

If you use the right shampoo the puppy should be O.K. I bath my dogs (both small) every other week. They are inside dogs. In the winter I bath them once a month.

We bathe both of our dogs once a month before we put on their monthly flea/tick prevention. If they get dirty in between bathing, I use doggie wipes on them that I found at Target. They work well and smell good too.

Once a week is fine. Make sure you use a good brand that will help reduce their skin from drying out. But if they need it then it's fine with the right doggy shampoo.

I was bathing my dog about once a month or so, and my vet told me that I should bathe her once a week with a soap free shampoo....
I still don't bathe her that often because it's a pain, but that's what the vet said
