portray mary and joseph. Afterwards all the members of the church were up in arms about it, half were outraged, and half thought they just had to comment on how lovely it was that they had used black people, and really make a big deal out of it. The whole time I was thinking, why does it matter, why do you have to make a big deal either way? It was 2 human beings walking down the aisle, thats it. whats your opinion?

People are people no matter what colour they are. I'm so sick of people judging others by the colour of their skin. If a person is a good person, tries to do the right thing, treats others with the respect they want to be treated with, are honest, mind their own business, are hard workers etc. then what difference does it make what colour their skin is. If everyone was blind, no one would know their neighbours skin colour so I wish the world would just live and let live.

The term acting is just that, acting. In the movies the actors play the part of killers, angels, politicians, singers, dancers, preachers etc. etc. etc. They are acting. Al Jolson played a black man. What difference does it make what the colour of actors skin in the church play was. Sheesh, these people are supposed to be good Christians, why are they being so petty about this?

There are enough bad things happening in the world to focus on without focussing on skin colour.

My mother is that way. She'd be up in arms because that old racism still lingers.

One thing is for sure, it's tough to break a down cultures prejudices.

I think the biggest problem is that human instinct is to form an opinion or a mental conception of Mary and Joseph and when someone changes that mental image it causes us mental pain and anguish, either cause we can't accept that portrayal as fiction or we are offended that someone would portray God or Mary or Joseph as anything other than pure white. Considering all this, it makes no sense to be up in arms about it cause it doesn't matter. The black man and woman are merely caricatures of the preconceived mental images we have of Mary and Joseph. I know I've not seen them lately and I suspect you haven't either.

I agree that it does not matter who you use to portray Mary and Joseph. But sometimes people are raised with religious beliefs and concepts. And religion tends to look at things from the physical point of view. I Sam 16:7 says, that man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

Thats about the closest resemblance to Jesus and Mary they ever saw.
The Pope prays every morning to a statue called, "The Black Madona and Child".
Why is it hard to understand , more than likely God looks out for the sufferers. If he sends a savior, its someone who can relate to suffering and if you look around the world today , the only people suffering are the people of color.
After Jesus they have been other saviors, they all were executed.

I'd have to agree with you. There's no reason to make a big deal out of it either way. I have a feeling that neither Mary nor Joseph were blue-eyed and blond like they are frequently shown in paintings.

I do not understand why they made a big deal either. One of my friends at church is black and deaf and he portrayed an angel in our Christmas pageant. He did an excellent job as well and did not have any special cues.

Since people want to go there I will tell you that Middle Eastern people had dark skin. Especially in biblical times. These Middle Easterners today with white skin are products of mixed blood. No one wants to admit that Jesus and other Biblical people were not white people. The people who don't admit that are the same who don't like to admit advanced Egypt is in Africa. Egypt turned Arab in the 6th century as a product of mixed marriage and conquering. Can you guess what color they were before that? And why is it scientifically proven that Black people were first?

All Human Beings are, well, Human Beings.
All Human Beings are Created in the Image and Likeness of GOD Almighty.
Well.
Satan and his Angels (Bad) are the Real Enemys of All Human Beings.
Jesus was the Only Human Being Who could say that Satan didn't have anything in HIM.
Well.

of all the places to have that kind of controversy! this was a play about the birth of the Jesus. it's amazing that this wonderful story got over shadowed by narrow minded thinking. why would the race of the people playing the characters even be a topic? did the people who were raising Cain about the race of the actors forget that they were in church? church is the house of god. god does not judge. i guess those folks missed that sermon!

It is very stupid to portray them as black. They should be portrayed as people from the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean area. It is stupid to change their skin color for political reasons.
