I had a root canal a couple of years ago and I was absolutely terrified to have it done. To be honest, the worst part was getting the numbing shot. It took 2.5 hours to have the procedure done - I was tired of lying back with my mouth open, but overall it really wasn't bad. I had no pain whatsoever afterwards. I had been in so much pain before from the infected tooth, that having the root canal completed was a huge relief! It's not going to be as bad as you think. Waiting and worrying is always the worst part. Good luck!!

I've had 3 surgical root canals and to be honest with you, the worst part is the injection of the anesthesia into the gums. Talk about pain... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh! Once the anesthesia sets in, you won't be able to feel any of the work being done.
So, relax and take a deep breath. There's no sense in going to your Endodontist's office all scared. As I've mentioned, the only pain during a root canal procedure is the pain from the injection of the local anesthesia.

i don't know how old you are... but if you're 21 or younger, my advice is GO TO A PEDIATRIC DENTIST! :) my first root canal was done by a pediatric dentist and i didn't feel a thing.
if you're too old to go to a pediatric dentist, ask your dentist to give you nitrous oxide on top of the local anesthetic. if you're still worried about it, call your dentist and ask if they do any kind of sedated dental work. if they do, then they'll put you out completely and you won't feel a thing..
root canals aren't that bad. i've had to have two done in my life, and they really didn't hurt that much at all. they'll prescribe you some painkillers just in case, but if yours are anything like mine were, you won't need them.

I have never been operated on, never in the hosptial except for surgical rool canal. I was given the option of being awake or 'out'. I choose out. When it happened, alI remember, is waking up when it was over. Had my daughter drive me home. Best visit to the dentist ever.
If you can call ANY visit to the dentist a pleasent thing!!

Surgical root canal is not the same as regular root canal. Could require more pain management afterward...good luck

I would never have a root canal because it's one of those procedures that will just need to be repeated in a few years. My orthodontist told me that it's a waste of money and often times unnecessary. Good luck to you...I know I would be nervous, too!

if you can handle anesthesia well then you wont have a problem at all...the recovery is rough for a few days and you wont want to eat much but its worth getting rid of the pain..my bf just had the tooth pulled cuz he didnt want to go through with it but now he has to get the hole filled so he is in a lose, lose situation

For me, the worst thing was not the pain, but the fact that your are well aware what is going on. It was more mental anguish than physical. I actually fainted during the procedure. It sucked.
