He represents a time period and culture like no one else did. It isn't so much that he could draw, paint or sculpt that your looking for in his art (although he could, if you saw some of his sketches from art school), it's what his art represents. He took a time period (the 60s) and a group of people that he was hanging around with (Lou Reed, David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Alan Ginsberg, etc.) and icons of his time (Marilyn Monroe) and immortalized them, along with everyday Americana (Campbell's Soup). If your husband can't appreciate that, he doesn't know very much about conceptual art or any other cultural aspect of society, for that matter.

I think Andy Warhol's art is many things. Andy started out as a photographer during the depression-hence his room full of pix of people committing suicide. Art-no, sensationalizim, maybe, using what he did to make a buck-definately! His silk screens were so advanced at his time. I especially like his Mickey Mouse, Marilyn Monroe and the series of silk screens he did of himself.. It was probably very cool to do that kind of stuff in his day. His room with the balloons is fun and the music from the" Velvet Underground" adds to the mystic of his art. Is he really an artist? Any one including children who use apaint brush, pencil, markers or any other art supply is .
I think Andy was trying to get a lot a cross about commericalism and perhaps he did that well. The rest of his stuff, the punching bags with ink drawings of Jesus and photos of people leaping to their doom, do not impress me as art forms.. also. I believe he tried so hard to make a name for himself by trying to hang out with the artist he painted which didn't work, and for pushing the Velvet Underground as such a termendous musical force which it wasn't, is just one of his many attempts for his 15 minutes of fame. I think he succeeded at that though.
I think you need to remember that when the Warhol Museum was opened, none of his so called celebrity friends showed up. Goes to show how much they thought of his work, and they were it. Art-sure. Good art- another story.

Andy Warhol has his own style how he define art in his artmaking, what I think about him is that his painting and printmaking on theme are influencial that based on media that are formed as an art to my own liking. However, everyones' favorites are different, because contemporary art movement changed into different trends nowadays. What I like about Andy Warhol is his artworks that talks about media and own style vividly, is his character approached this art making in style of pop art which are eyecatching. His artworks have it's own aesthetics that some people like or dislike to their preferences as they define aesthetic differently.

i think its art. He was part of the Pop Art trend in the 60's. what is art to one person isn't to another. Warhol himself was so eccentric and interesting. His art work even more.

art is the expression of some desire, urge, opinion, statement, emotion or anything else- an expression to the extent that whatever you have created has captured that intitial unexpressed thought into corporeality. So if what he made gave him satisfaction and peace of mind, and provokes any kind of emotion or reaction in anyone else, then it's art.

Have your husband (and you, too) read "What is Painting?" by Julian Bell. Then, have the discussion about Warhol.

Well, I'm not a fan of his art...
...but I don't think anyone can say that it's NOT art. I see stuff all the time that I want to say "That's not art!!" but I bite my tongue because i know that, to someone else, it is art.

He's amazing. Like David Bowie said, "a scream." there is no argument. Repetitive imagery is innovative and very cool

It's art but I don't dig it. I think it's over rated. It's not bad stuff i just don't think it's as good as people praise it to be.
I have drank on his grave though.
