First of all, put some ear drops in the ear canal (you can get this at any pet dept.) and then kinda fold the ear flap over the opening and rub pretty vigorously over the space right below the opening for about a minute. (this loosens any waxy buildup). Then take a paper towel and twist it to make like a funnel shape that's small enough to fit in the ear canal but large enough that it fills the space and stuff it down the canal a ways. twist it around and pull it out. You should see little globs of wax and debris stuck on it. Repeat the stuffing in the canal and twisting a few times in each ear. You can clean the area around the canal with a damp paper towel and your finger. One note of caution though...if your dog's ears really smell pretty bad and he keeps shaking his head or scratching at his ear then he may have a yeast infection in them and you'll need to get some eardrops from your vet. I just took my dog in to the vet last week for this same thing, that's how I knew how to tell you what to do. (Also, look in his ear and if there's a lot of brown gooky looking stuff in it, then it's probably a yeast infection or ear mites.) You can also get ear mite treatments at the pet store. Do that treatment the same way.

Take your dog to the vet .. he may have ear mites and/or an infection that will need treating.
If you try to clean them with cotton buds, you will push the junk further into the ear canal. After the infections have been cleared up, there is a special ear cleaning liquid that you can put in the ears.
If your dog has long floppy ears you have to take extra care that the air gets to them

This sounds like yeast infection in your dogs ears.
Dogs w/ears that hang can not breath.
1st clean the ear w/peroxide good with cotton balls.
Next get you a tube of women's VAGISIL CREAM.
Get a container for this w/a lid (small-med. size baby food jar).
Squirt the vagisil cream into the jar, then fill the rest of the jar up w/baby oil.
Baby oil will take care of ear mites & Vagisil cream will take care of yeast infection.
SHAKE UP WELL, b/f applying.
Get 3 cc or ml syringe for administering. You can buy at any drug store. Just tell the druggist what you want it for. It cost about 26 cents.
Clean & treat once a day for 10 days straight.
You do not say what size dog you have....sooooooooo
Small dog-apply 1 cc or ml to each ear a day.
Med. dog-apply 2 cc or ml to each ear a day
LG dog-apply 2 1/2 -3 cc or ml to each ear a day

Get some ear cleanser made for dogs, put a fairly large amount in the ear canal until full, "squish" the ear to help break up the wax and debris. Then take a kleenex and wipe out the excess. If the odor continues your dog may have an ear infection that requires antibiotics

For now, warm water with a little vinegar and a cotton ball. Take him to the Vet, an untreated ear infection can lead to deafness in dogs.

Stanky ears?
When you clean them is there a black crumbly ick or just normal smooth brown waxy looking gunk?

One of our dogs/lab has had 'yeasty' ears alot. Some folks think it's a sure sign of food allergies to have recurring infections.

It can be PAINFUL when you clean their ears --be gentle please.
Definitely SEE A VET, let them show you how to clean the ears and what to watch out for.

When is the last time YOU had an ear infection it would drive me NUTS!

holistically interest?

BEFORE YOU PUT ANYTHING IN THIS DOG'S EARS......

Smell is usually associated with a problem

Earmite infestations smell a little "sweet"
Yeast infections smell a little "sour"

Earmites treated with almond oil
Yeast infection with a wash of water and a small amount of vinegar

However, if you do not have the experience to properly diagnose then I beg you to please take this dog to a vet BEFORE YOU MAKE THIS WORSE by putting anything in that dogs ears

If they stink, there is an infection. Cleaning them will not do the trick. You need to take the dog to the vet to have them looked at.
