yeah, what he said and DON'T GRAB THE RAILS. Don't crawl up on your knees either, it's a hard habit to break. Do LOTS of push ups it took me about a year to get to the point where I could paddle out, get in a wave and pop up. Then go back out & start again. Just don't give up! oh and put a piece of tape on the ground to mark where your feet should be.

The good news is you can practice this out of the water.

Lay on your stomach like you are paddling and practice hopping to your feet into you surf stance. Bring your knees up under your chest and make sure you have your knees bent when you stand.

Do reps of 20 at a time and you will definitely be quicker to your feet the next time you surf. If you can get up more confidently, then you can focus on staying up and getting into the wave.

when your pushing up, have your arms fully extended with your back arched put don't push down the front of your board it will slow you down (you can tell by the tip of the nose of the board) and kind of slide you hips up under where your chest should be if you were laying down on the board. when your jumping to your feet you should be taking your hands off the board the same time (don't hang on to the rail always have your hands flat) This should be one smooth move practice on the beach or practice on your bed with your board. to get the move in your head and also to build up your upper body strength.

Definitely gotta go with the practicing out of water. Also, strong arms and abs help. Make sure those are nice and strong.
