Continue to read the Word (God talking to you), Pray (you talking to Him), and fellowship (God talking to all His children through each other). Also, God will goad you in certain directions via life circumstances, chance meetings of people, and events he wants you to experience. Once you learn to see God in all of these things, and read His Word--in part to learn to better please the One you claim to love above all else--you will feel much closer to Him than you ever had before.
Part of the key is repenting from, rather than justifying sins you may still struggle with: God is holy, and has to shield Himself from it via the sacrificial blood of His Son. The more we are like the example Jesus set for us, the closer to, and more intimate relationship we have with the Father.

Pray for Gods will in your life. Always talk to him. If you have a problem and God is the first one you think of going to instead of earthly friends, then you have a great relationship with him!

Well, the tasks are fairly well known.
1. Thank God for forgiveness in the name of Christ Jesus.
2. Then Praise God.
3. I'd not ask God to teach me patience (whoa).
4. Ye shall know them by their fruit. Manifest love, joy, forgiveness, faith and believing.
5. Fellowship with likeminded believers.
6. Study to show thyself approved before God, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

First put religion aside for now.
Personal relationship basically is Faith in God, Jesus.
For me it's spiritual, I feel God, I feel the truth, God communicates to me in so many many many ways, be open to him, listen..... trust me when I say .... God is there, Jesus is there, and the Holy ghost, be patient, especially in prayers, it's powerful.
By being open to God, by taking steps first to our Lord, and being patient shows God that you love and have Faith in him, and he will start communicating more to you. Basically God has always been there, but were not listening to all the ways that he does communicate.... God communicates in voice, spiritual- feel, dreams, through others, radio, TV, Church, phone, news, white dove, Spirits, Holy ghost, his presence, to many to list, basically everything is done for a reason.
Be open, understanding, spiritual, patient, and God would communicate more to you.
God has saved my life many times, God has done a lot for me, I felt his presence intervene to me once on a job site, in the very moment of truth and compassion I had for my Boss, I felt what God said to me in my head," I am happy with you"
Be sincere, and compassionate in your prayers, that works the best.

Mediating is a good place to start. Begin by allowing yourself some quiet time in order to clear your mind and focus on your breathing and inner self. Then just listen.
It has been said that prayer is how we talk to God. Meditation is how God talks to us.

For an unbeliever:
"... if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10

Reject this evil world, and all it's material influences.
Find your spirit within. Only then can you get closer to the Master and Creator.
